CORINE Soil erosion risk and important land resources - in the southern regions of the European Community (Dec 31 1994 23:00 GMT) - The rational management of land resources represents one of the most important and challenging policy issues in the European Community. lt is an issue which is relevant at both the national and international level. lt is an issue, also, which cuts across many different policy interests - environment, agriculture, rural and regional development - each of which both influences and is affected by the nature and problem of land resources. lt is an issue of which the importance has been stressed on a number of occasions by the European Parliament.Given the increasing threat to land resources, and especially the growing problem of soil erosion in Mediterranean regions, an urgent need thus exists to provide information which can help to target policy actions to the areas of greatest need. |

CORINE Biotypes - The design, compilation and use of an inventory of sites of major importance for nature conservation in the European Community (Dec 31 1994 23:00 GMT) - The biotopes project forms part of the CORINE experimental work programme of the Commission of the European Communities, concerned with 'gathering, coordinating and ensuring the consistency of information on the state of the environment and natural resources in the Community'. The first task for the biotopes project was to establish a Community network of sources of information and expertise on all aspects of nature conservation. Within this network, agreed procedures were then developed and implemented: These procedures (in particular, the selection criteria and the various standard nomenclatures developed in the biotopes project) are now also accepted as a basic standard by many international, national and regional agencies responsible for nature protection. A database describing some 6 000 sites of Community importance for nature conservation has been created and represents the most comprehensive European source of such information. |
