European Freshwater Monitoring Network Design (Jul 21 1999 10:59 GMT) - This report describes in detail the design of a freshwater monitoring network proposed for improvement of quantitative assessment of water resources - aquifers, rivers, lakes and reservoirs - across Europe. The proposed network is designed to give a representative view or assessment of water types within a Member Country and also across the EEA area. It will ensure that similar types of water bodies are compared. |

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity - Follow-up in EEA Member Countries 1996 (Jul 21 1999 10:59 GMT) - In 1992 the UN global Convention on Biological Diversity was signed in Rio de Janeiro. All parties shall follow-up the intentions of the Convention in their own activities in strategies, plans and policies. This report contains an analysis of the follow-up activities performed during 1996 by the 18 EEA Member Countries. It concludes that the follow-up process and activities were not easy for any country and that all countries are trying to develop the follow-up work in different ways. |

Databases on Species, Habitats and Sites - Survey and Analysis 1995-96 (Jul 21 1999 10:59 GMT) - The report presents the findings and the analysis of the overview and lists the title of all datasets identified by country. Not surprisingly the largest amount of data concerns mammals or birds, while other animal groups and plants or habitattypes are much less well documented. National datasets on populations and distribution of Annex II species of the Habitats Directive are shown to be very limited at present. |

CORINE Biotopes Sites - Database Status and Perspectives 1995 (Jul 21 1999 10:59 GMT) - This report gives an overview of the status of the database hosted by ITE in 1995, the site selection criteria used by Member States in site descriptions and the contents in terms of information on sites, habitat types and species. It contains a proposal for a re-orientation of the database as a background for the future EUNIS, which is to be developed by ETC/NC for use both for the NATURA 2000 process and for the Agency pan-European reporting on the state of the environment. |

Second anniversary of the EEA (Jul 21 1999 10:57 GMT) - This speech was held by Mr. Domingo Jiménez-Beltrán on the occasion of the second anniversary of the EEA. The speech begins with an appraisal of the multi-national experience of writing the Dobris report for the SOFIA-conference. Then follows a brief recap of the major findings in the Dobris. This leads to the introduction of the 5EAP report, which marks a change in the direction of the EU environmental policy, from passive reporting on state of the environment to a more progressive reporting technique that include a temporal perspective and the inclusion of environmental issues in economic policy sectors. |
