The Day After (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Back at work after an awesome four day weekend. It looks to be a light week since most of my project team is out of the office. Jabber-wise, the Marbles project needs some attention.

Christmas presents (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - I'm happy to say that Jabber Inc. recently released some code that will help us build out the network of Jabber servers. One is the Server Connection Manager (or SCM) -- a rock-solid server-to-server component that can scale really high. Perhaps of greater long-term significance are the Jabber External Component Libraries (or JECL) -- a set of three C++ libraries that handle the low-level details of writing external server components (such as thread pooling, socket management, and XML parsing). In fact, SCM is written on top of JECL and provides a great example of how to write external components with JECL.

Tigris frustration (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Argh. The Jabber Tigris site has been down for almost a day now. I was hoping to dig out j2blog-agent and get it upgraded to the latest versions of bedrock and such. I guess it'll have to wait until the New Year -- since I'll have to rewrite it. One thing I would like to see in clients however, is a specialized editing window for posting blog stuff.

Update (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Well, it's been a while since anyone posted to this site. The reasoning is that people wanted a centralized place for Jabber news. That's well and good, but I think I'd like to start making updates now and then as a sort of journal of Jabber and what goes on behind the scenes. Not really news...just the evolution of the community from one person's perspective.

Getting it Together (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Dizzy and I started using this site as a good place to post news, but now that we're getting our act together over on jabber.org I'm posting a lot of news there. Right now it gets posted to dev.jabber.org but we may move the location in a future site clean-up.

cool new stuff (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - I put together a news post on dev.jabber.org last night, describing some recent developments in the Jabber world. Among other things I noted integration of Jabber with another blogging system, as well as a new blog that bears watching by one of the pioneers of Jabber. So have a look.

over the weekend... (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Happy Monday, Jabber fans! Version 0.2 of the Jabberpy library was released over the weekend. This is a Python library for Jabber development created by Matt Allum, one of Jabber's growing UK contingent. Other recent releases include the JabberXM components for integrating Jabber into Mozilla applications.

Jabber:JAX:Component (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Piers Harding has created a Perl wrapper for Dizzy's JECL code. The wrapper, called Jabber::JAX::Component, is designed to help you write external Jabber server components in a flash. Although it's an alpha version, you Perl hackers might enjoy giving it a spin.

Jabber Web Pager (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Another cool little Jabber app: Al Sutton announced the availability of code that enables people to send Jabber messages to you from a web page. He calls it the Jabber Web Pager and it's available here.

Client Cheat Sheet (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - An interesting link popped on to JDEV this morning -- Jens Alfke has written a Client Cheat Sheet. Pretty useful stuff if you're interested in writing a Jabber client.

Sept 5 (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Good morning, Jabber fans. A few interesting emails popped up on JDEV -- one of them a few weeks ago (so I'm a little behind on my email) :). Dion Loy announced a Google agent by the name of "Joogle". Apparently, this allows one to search Google via a Jabber client.

Sept 4 (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Lots of interesting stuff going on in JabberLand today. Temas announced that the first code release of the next-gen Jabber routing hub is now publicly available. Also check out the jabelin.org site -- bare, but it's got the essentials. :

Happy Labor Day! (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - It's a beautiful morning! Happy Labor Day. JDEV has been quiet over the weekend, a few rumblings about being able to log all the messages passing through a server, a QNX client request, and the annoucement of a new client -- Marvin.

No news is good news...? (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Nothing much has happened the last few days in JabberLand. Work has been a consuming fire for a lot of people -- it's been a harder week than most.

Brand new day (Jan 03 2002 18:01 GMT) - Well, a new CCM (Client Connection Manager) has gone up on Jabber.org -- it's reduced the load on the system by 50% or more. Theoretically, this should allow Jabber.org to host a couple of thousand concurrent users comfortably. There has been some discussion about the lack of centralization when it comes to Jabber news.
