- The BBC fairly recently posted a story on old rats that were fed acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid - two substances you can easily purchase at health food & supplements stores - and who started to look more like young rats: more energetic, better memory, "everything" they looked at was improved. Look up recent articles by Dr Bruce Ames, of the University of California at Berkeley, in the journal of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for more details. Professor David Colquhoun, an expert in pharmacology at University College London, urged a note of caution: he said "Before rushing out to the local health food shop, perhaps people should bear in mind that this treatment has not yet been shown to be effective in humans, and neither has it been shown to be safe. |
