Lott's Thurmond remark illustrates a painful truth (Dec 11 2002 08:37 GMT) - What has even Republican commentators concerned, like Andrew Sullivan and David Frum, is that Lott's remark illustrates a shamefull strategy of the Republican Party. If one were to judge the parties appeal strictly by its economic and domestic policy, Republicans would not get many voters who make less than a 150k per year. But in the South, and much of rural America, they have enhanced their appeal by pandering to the less educated, lower income whites who maintain racist beliefs. This is amply borne out by any examination of congressional roll calls. The term "Tax and Spend Liberal" is a code phrase for it, (in fact the Republicans have been the real spenders of the last twenty years) but the phrase sticks |
