Bob Morris: The Politics of Water

Water-sharing plan's demise blamed on ... (Dec 21 2002 08:26 GMT)

- Water-sharing plan's demise blamed on Bush administration "A bipartisan group of 22 California lawmakers signed a letter Thursday blaming the Bush administration for the collapse of a landmark water pact aimed at reducing the state's dependence on the Colorado River. The Associated Press (AP) reported that a letter to US Interior Secretary Gale Norton said that her department's lack of leadership helped unravel the deal earlier this month." If a deal on the water is not reached by Dec 31, a mere ten days from now, California faces mandatory and immediate cutbacks in the amount of water it gets from the Colorado River. This is a humungous water war, involving most of the Western states, and pitting California cities against farmers in the agricultural valleys.
