Shift Operators and Fixed Point Multipliers in J2ME (Mar 31 2003 23:53 GMT) - I think I will end up coding out my own J2ME Fixed Point library and make it an open source library. All the fixed point libraries that I have examined do not use the shift opreator to reduce the mutiplying and division operations with more efficient shift operations. For example lets say we want a fixed point multiplier of 256. That is shift operation of 8 to the left or to the right if you want division. In the divison case you are using the Arithmetic Right Shift (> |

Prophecies + A suicide (Mar 31 2003 23:53 GMT) - Thought I'd summarize some prophecies for the next two years that I found on the Internet and then see whether they come true: 1. George W. Bush will be the victim of a serious attempt on his life, something round the end of summer or later next year; dunno whether he dies, but there's gonna be something people said. |

FireWire and USB 2.0 external ... (Mar 31 2003 23:51 GMT) - FireWire and USB 2.0 external hard drives. USB 2.0 vs. FireWire isn't really shaping up to be the kind of family-dividing, friendship-ending conflict that it could have been - lots of new PCs come with ports for both now, pretty much solving the problem of having to make sure that all your peripherals are one or the other. |

Underground opposition (Mar 31 2003 23:51 GMT) - "A friend of mine has just returned from a week in New York, during which time she encountered nobody who was in favour of the war. Nobody. One day, her attempts to get across town by cab were blocked by an anti-war demonstration involving 300,000 people. Did this remarkable event - in a nation which, remember, is officially at war - receive serious coverage on CNN? Do I need to ask? |

United State of Iraq (Mar 31 2003 23:41 GMT) - "A US blueprint to rebuild blitzed Iraq will turn the nation into a 'little America', it was claimed yesterday. Every aspect of Iraqi life will be affected. There are even proposals to draw up a 'politically neutral' school curriculum and replace the Iraqi dinar with the dollar. The aim is to create under the USAID agency an open society modelled on Western democracies. But critics in the region will see it as confirmation that the US wants to turn Iraq into a puppet state. |

Work Is A Four Letter Word (Mar 31 2003 23:39 GMT) - To date there is no short fiction anthology in Canada which focuses on the experience of work. Over the past thirty years various poets have addressed the almost "pathological avoidance" of the accurate representation of work in literature. Tom Wayman's anthologies of work poetry and those of the Industrial Writers' Union have done a great deal to help establish a literary culture which values human labour. However, fiction has not received the same exposure. This call for work fiction manuscripts continues an increasingly important examination of the swiftly changing nature of employment and how it affects the ways we think and feel about the world around us. |
