I Think David Weinberger is Being VERY Rude (Mar 13 2003 00:52 GMT) - Its not often a fairly erudite explanation of arcane radio frequency physics makes me laugh, (lets face it, I don't understand the physics and its NOT my idea of a good read) but this piece from David Weinberger on SATN seems to be getting at someone. In the meantime what he seems to be suggesting to me is that if wireless network regulators and system designers were prepared to do sufficiently careful calculations and made the right kind of choices, there would be nothing to "interfere:" with the development of very low cost, ubiquitous, high speed wireless Internet access. And that makes me SMILE HUGELY |

How Does Open Source Affect CS Research? (Mar 13 2003 00:25 GMT) - I was reading a computer science research paper today in which the authors frequently referred to how Linux operated with respect to their thesis. They explicitly stated in several places, and left implicit in others, that they were assuming other Unices or even all other OSes worked the same way, when in fact that assumption was wrong ... Assembly Dependencies (Mar 13 2003 00:20 GMT) - Some excerpts from Better Living Through Software [Early Adopter] I can't count how many times I've heard someone say "I don't want to be dependent on Microsoft.VisualBasic, especially for just a few routines". And yet, I've never heard anyone say "I don't want to be dependent on System.XML just for a config file." And, System. |
