Gary Benson's Diary

The Ypres Salient (Mar 15 2003 23:59 GMT)

- Another bright and sunny day, and another early start: we had a guide to meet (after our honeymoon I'm convinced that local guides are worth their weight in gold) for our tour of Ypres (Ieper to its friends). On the way there (and during the train on journey's on Friday) I'd been pondering about how subtly different the countryside looks in different countries, and the guide pointed out that one reason for this was that there were no hedgerows anywhere: they were all destroyed in the war and afterwards they were replaced with the barbed wire that was so plentiful. All of the trees are young too.

Too much talk (Mar 15 2003 23:50 GMT)

- Sorry about the title. This constant droning about war and peace makes me feel like I'm reading a Tolstoy novel. I saw the budding writer Chiara tormenting poor Cedric: Vow, Cedric, are you saying that there is no way for us to reach a peaceful solution for Iraq, that we must go and hit Baghdad, a city of 12 million people, most of them innocent, and they have already suffered from the brutal regime of Saddam as it is, with a force almost equal to the bombing of Hiroshima. Andy Oliver was linking to Peace Porn (can I trademark that phrase?

Practical Cryptography (Mar 15 2003 23:35 GMT)

- Receive this from Bruce Schneier's newsletter, he's releasing a new book in September about practical uses of cryptography. "In "Practical Cryptography," we took a single problem and discussed it deeply.  The most common problem cryptography solves is what I call a secure channel: Alice and Bob want to communicate securely over some insecure communications line, so they need to establish a secure channel on top of that insecure line.
