Zen and the Art of Bugfixing (Mar 16 2003 09:57 GMT) - I fixed a big Technorati bug today. As the database has grown (it is now tracking over 135,000 blogs every hour) I've grown concerned about its performance. Sometimes queries would come back very quickly, and sometimes the site seemed incredibly bogged down - almost useless, even for simple queries. |

If they film a fourth ... (Mar 16 2003 09:53 GMT) - If they film a fourth Austin Powers, then the setting will be Nomi Lodge. It wasn't straight out of the 1960s, it was the 1960s. All the way from the lime green linoleum (complete with a tasteful yellowish tile pattern) to the thick glass 'ashtray' bowls from which cold spaghetti was served for breakfast. Superb! I'd had my doubts about spending the night here, but after only five minutes or so, I was converted. |

The Golly Sweater (Mar 16 2003 09:41 GMT) - Max spotted that the photo of me from 1983 showed me wearing a sweater with the Robertson's Golly on it, and commented that you couldn't buy one of those now. In fact, you couldn't buy one of those then; it was a handknit by my mum. I absolutely adored that... |

Template Redesign, CSS Question (Mar 16 2003 09:10 GMT) - I've been playing around with a mockup of a slightly redesigned version of this weblog. The CSS is mostly working in the browsers I care about (Mozilla & recent MSIEs on Windows & Mac OS X), except I can't figure out how to make the boxes around each weblog entry "do the obviously right thing". I have a calendar, some nav-links, and the standard Radio clutter (badge, XML, mailto, copyright) in a column on the right side of the page. I want the weblog entries' boxes to be to the left of that column, but to spread out to take up the entire width of the browser once they get below the bottom end of the calendar column. Best would be for one entry to be shaped like Utah, but I suspect that's not going to be possible, even with some fancy Javascript trickery. |

Comments (Mar 16 2003 09:05 GMT) - Short comment on this: JavaBear Put your comment on the appropriate level. Implementation details don't belong in the method's javadoc, but maybe in the method's comment. "The counter i is increased with 2 each time because..." does not belong in the method's comment. |
