Linux Gain: Who's Loss? (Mar 18 2003 09:38 GMT) - A recent study shows that Linux is gaining more marketshare. Some of it is probably due to people moving from windows NT to linux but noticeable in the Evans Data Corp study is the fact that "the survey indicates that 29.8% of application developers who target Linux were previously targeting Unix." Companies like Sun Microsystems and HP should worry about this trend too as they may be losing marketshare to an OS that they see as a competitive tool. In their blind fight against Microsoft, some Unix vendors may be cutting off their own air supply. |

Weblogs as the meme machine (Mar 18 2003 09:29 GMT) - The idea of humans as meme machines was popularized by Susan Blackmore in her book The Meme Machine. However, to me this seems farfetched, and to some extend plainly wrong, when you realize the complexity of the human being as a whole, including the role of emotions and the body memory as well. Perhaps weblogs as a system function like a meme machine. Then humans are the operators of the meme machine. But weblogs currently function poorly: |

Starting a blog-team (Mar 18 2003 09:22 GMT) - I'm starting to think about getting together a blog-team. First of all, i need a domain and hosting... I'll do that as soon as i've settled on some work (and have a steady income, unlike now). For the hosting i need only php (prefferably with gd or gd2 lib turned on) and mysql (and ftp access). After that i'm thinking about persuading some of my friends to join the blogging experience. |
