Off to the Continent (Mar 19 2003 23:55 GMT) - We're headed to London (and Brighton) for a wedding and then Carcassonne in the south of France for a few days of recreation on a barge. The barge isn't actually going anywhere--our friends operate take rich Americans up and down the canal in the summer. So, this site won't be updated until April 1 or so, when I'm back in the Great White North. Cheers from Piers: We don't actually know him... |

You go, Holmes! (Mar 19 2003 23:52 GMT) - This just in: Holmes Rolston III, Professor of Philosophy at Colorado State University, whose 30 years of research, writing and lecturing on the religious imperative to respect nature have established the field of environmental ethics, has been named the 2003 Templeton Prize laureate. The prize, valued at more than one million dollars, was announced today at a news conference at the Church Center for the United Nations in New York. Rolston, also University Distinguished Professor at Colorado State and a Presbyterian minister, is one of the world's leading advocates for protecting the Earth's biodiversity and ecology in recognition of the intrinsic value of creation, including the ongoing evolutionary genesis in the natural world. In philosophical circles, he is widely known as the "father of environmental ethics. |

Fortune: Washington Mutual - a new banking model (Mar 19 2003 23:47 GMT) - Kimberly Allers reports on the unique approach that Washington Mutual brings to retail banking. While banking behemoths like Citigroup and Chase were investing millions to steer customers out of their branches and to faceless ATMs and the Internet during the past several years, Washington Mutual courted customers in underserved urban markets by offering free checking and other wallet-targeted incentives. With its customer-oriented appeal to the mass market and its own version of everyday low pricing, the bank known as WaMu (pronounced "WAH-moo") has earned comparisons to retail giant Wal-Mart. |

Sister Open Source States (Mar 19 2003 23:40 GMT) - During the past four years, Utah and about half the other states have cooperatively developed State Government Information Locater Services. Within this group of states, about eight, with the assistance of the State of Washington State Library, have developed search engines using Microsoft Site Server technology. I noticed today that Rhode Island has joined Oregon, Utah, and New Mexico in having their state portal powered by their State Library's Find-It search. Rhode Island, in fact, pioneered the use of MS Find-It. It was their Secretary of State's Office and State Library that sponsored the original Find-It programming that was later shared with us and other states. |

Brazilian magazine Veja: The name of the problem is Chavez (Mar 19 2003 23:39 GMT) - Brazilian magazine Veja has become a good source of articles which are critical of Chavez, here is the spanish version of one called "The name of the problem is Chavez", the original in Portuguese is here. I love the following description (not really, it is actually quite depressing): "The Brazilians who celebrated in the Sao Paulo Social Forum, last January, perhaps did not know that left-wing parties were the first to abandon Chavez. |

Thanking WROX. (Mar 19 2003 23:32 GMT) - Simon Brown: As authors, many of us are now in the situation where our work may never be published, or at least published in the form that we expected. Of course this isn't good, but don't forget about those staff at Wrox that have lost their jobs - they are in a much worse position than ourselves. I wish them all the luck for future. |

Ruling by example: High Government officials don't pay their taxes (Mar 19 2003 23:17 GMT) - The Mayor of the Baruta municipality of Caracas denounced today that a number of high Government officials have failed to pay their home real state taxes to that municipality in the last few years. The list was quite long, but I love the fact that the Head of the Tax Office is on the list as not having paid his taxes for two years and the fact that the Foreign Minister Roy Chaderton, who is always pontificating about the poor and being a good citizens, has not paid his for "only" eight years. Another prominent name is none other than the Attorney General Isaias Rodriguez who is supposed to uphold the law, but we knew he has never done that anyway. |

Googlespeak @ CMU (Mar 19 2003 23:10 GMT) - I went to a seminar this afternoon given by Marissa Mayer at Google. She is a fantastic speaker, very intelligent, and eloquent. She gave a solid talk that focused mainly on the Google interface, whcih we are so familiar with (the minimalistic design, use of white space, etc.). I asked a few questions during the talk and spoke with her a bit afterwards. |

The French, the U.N. and the war in Iraq (Mar 19 2003 23:08 GMT) - I love the consistency of French foreign policy, after opposing the war they now say they will join the fray if Saddam uses biological or chemical weapons. I also love how they toasted with champagne with Mugabe last month in Paris. Note that I have made no judgement on the war in Iraq, it would take another blog to explain my position on it, let me just say I don't oppose it, I just think it was incredibly stupid not to finish off the job in '91 and somehow it seems to me Colin Powell had a lot to do with it, no? As to the U.N. |
