Code Optimisation in .Net (Mar 19 2003 16:58 GMT)

- Saw an article a few months ago about code optimisation in .Net. The examples were in C# but I assume they apply to VB.Net and managed C++. It concerned the widely known good practice of extracting a value into a local variable rather than hitting an object property repeatedly which incurs greater overhead.

life as a story (Mar 19 2003 16:57 GMT)

- I have said that my life is a story being told to me by God. What I mean by this is that I seem to interprent events in my life as if they are a story - with a moral - and in this sense I am an observer of my life who learns about life through my observation. Everything has meaning, every single thing is a symbol for something else. The best way for me to explain is to share a story with you, which is a story my own father told me repeatedly throughout my childhood about his own childhood. This story grew in my imagination to be a story representative of the worldn and it went like this:

Matt Asay on Open Source (Mar 19 2003 16:47 GMT)

- Our own Matt Asay is speaking on on "The Open Source Work Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism." For those of you not up on the Utah high tech scene, Matt is a Stanford Law school grad who once worked for Lineo as the GM of their residential gateway business and now works for Novell. Matt is the host and force behind a series of monthly VC breakfasts that have been happening in Salt Lake City. Matt's talking about open source and his slides are clearly marked with a familiar "red N" logo in the corner. This is generating a little interest among some members of the press who are here.

Parliament votes for war (Mar 19 2003 16:44 GMT)

- There was a fine debate yesterday in the House of Commons. Blair won the vote, of course, although the rebellion was the largest ever. Passionate arguments were made for both sides of the argument. It restores one's faith in the process here, even if MPs do not always vote according to logic or their constituents' wishes. I had a three-page letter from my MP explaining his pro-goverment stance on the issue.

Merlin's empty, hipster life

Five surprises so far today (Mar 19 2003 16:03 GMT)

- I am listening to a "postrock" band--and thoroughly enjoying it. Who knew? So far the war in the desert sounds like "Burning Man" with some beefy guys from PE class Apparently, Elvis Costello actually did--albeit drunkenly and to annoy Bonnie Bramlett--call Ray Charles "a blind ignorant nigger" (I had always assumed it was an urban myth) After a solid 10 years of not listening to the Pogues--my fifth or seventh favorite band in college (ca. 1988)--hearing them again brings me tremendous joy. (Less of a surprise is that "The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn" is easily the single greatest song of all time) I've reached a pathetic phase in my life where reading a review of an electric knife over morning coffee sort of gave me a semi.
