The Cuban government has arrested 10 independent journalists, most of whom publish their work on the Internet. Havana says the reporters are part of a U.S. effort to foment political opposition in the country. |

Google Fights Back (Mar 20 2003 23:52 GMT) - Too bad all those genetic researchers won't ever have the opportunity to combine their interest in fancy-schmancy deoxyribonucleic acid with home masturbation tips. Not until I add the video section, that is. |

What else can I say? (Mar 20 2003 23:51 GMT) - I wish I could say something eloquent and poignant about the war that our government has started, but I can't. The words just don't come out quite right. What I will say is this: I do not support this war, but now that it has already begun, I do support... |

I was interviewed by a ... (Mar 20 2003 23:49 GMT) - I was interviewed by a wire service, asked how today's events compare to 9/11/01, from the weblog point of view. After a bit of thought, there's no comparison. Today's news is far away from sources accessible to bloggers. There was plenty of time for the big networks and newspapers to get into position. 9-11 was a surprise, blogs can mobilize more quickly, and we have more people in NY and Washington. |

Five Songs for These Times (Mar 20 2003 23:38 GMT) - Sixpence None the Richer "Breathe Your Name", from Divine Discontent Even though the entire song makes me think of a yet-to-be-produced teen-drama that might play on The WB, it has yet to fail to make me smile. The vibes used on the bridge into the chorus are especially nice. The Smashing Pumpkins "Stand Inside Your Love", from MACHINA | the machines of God This song is the soaring pinnacle of their career. Why? Because poor little Billy sounds like he's actually having fun. |

The United States may use a super-secret microwave 'e-bomb,' which could render the Iraqi military's computers, radar and radios useless. It could also disable electronic ignitions and cause power outages. The Pentagon declines to comment. [Wired News] |

When a Gun Is More ... (Mar 20 2003 23:26 GMT) - When a Gun Is More Than a Gun. The U.S. military is shrinking thermobaric bombs -- which light the surrounding air on fire and asphyxiate those left in the flames' wake -- so they can be shot out of rifles. It's a fearsome amount of firepower to give to individual soldiers. |

TV vs. the Web (Mar 20 2003 23:25 GMT) - Tim Bray, a geek after our own heart: I don't have a TV (ok, we do, but it only plays DVDs, it doesn't get any channels). I miss it every October during the World Series, and I miss it at times like now when hot news is breaking. Many fortunes have been lost betting on the notion of "convergence" and it was always silly; the Web doesn't need to be more like TV and TV doesn't need to be more like the Web.... |

Chavez on Iraq (Mar 20 2003 23:16 GMT) - Hugo Chavez finally spoke on the war in Iraq, using very mild language (extremely mild for the man who said the US had it coming on Sept. 11th.), arguing for peace, respect for internatioanl law and the United Nations. Nowhere in his words did he condemn the US or any of its allies for the, showing once again what a cynic he is.......As I said before Chavez does not want to offend his OPEC partners who are all in favor of the war in Iraq. |

Simplifying Java Development. (Mar 20 2003 23:05 GMT) - Sun Microsystems plans to simplify Java software development through a number of efforts including a Java tool targeting the Visual Basic skill level. Making development easier is certainly the right idea, but attempting this with the Java programming language seems to be an oxymoron. Java cannot be all things to all people. I propose Sun consider introducing a scripting mechanism based on ECMAScript/JavaScript. |

Fun for a change (Mar 20 2003 23:05 GMT) - Good one spotted on stronglytyped and coming from The Code Project: An architect, an artist and an IT guy were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or a mistress. The architect said he enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring relationship. The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because of the passion and mystery he found there. |

the new andrew lloyd-webber: gas chamber a gogo (Mar 20 2003 23:03 GMT) - schlafgas hiess es angeblich noch. schlafgas, das gab es in bond-filmen. da wurde immer gesagt: sowas gibt es garnicht, das kann nicht funktionieren. und wer sich mal mit gasfoermigen btms beschaeftigt hat, dem leuchtet das auch ein, denn die in der anaesthesie eingesetzten gase (alte bekannte wie lachgas, aether, chloroform) sind fluechtig und schwierig zu dosieren. |
