Blood Vessel Networks (Mar 20 2003 18:57 GMT)

- PHYSICS NEWS UPDATEThe American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Physics NewsNumber 629 March 19, 2003by Phillip F. Schewe, Ben Stein, and James RiordonA new mathematical model is leading to insights about the formation of blood vessel networks. The model, proposed by researchers from several Italian institutions, accurately mimics vascular structures formed by cells randomly spread on a gel matrix. Chemical cues entice cells on a growing medium to migrate and aggregate into groups. Below a certain cell density, the model and related experiments show many disconnected groups are formed.

How Does the Sun Shine? (Mar 20 2003 18:55 GMT)

- PHYSICS NEWS UPDATEThe American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Physics NewsNumber 629 March 19, 2003by Phillip F. Schewe, Ben Stein, and James Riordon The SNO and Super-Kamiokande detectors have done a handy job of accounting for the neutrinos coming from the decay of boron-8 nuclei in the sun. But the flux from B-8 decays represents a mere 0.02% of the predicted flux of solar neutrinos, and one wants to study other types of nu production in order to get a better grip on nuclear physics in the sun's core. One would especially like to know more about neutrinos from Be-7, N-13 and O-15 decays (catalyzed by carbon-12), and from proton-proton reactions.

Schewe, Ben Stein, and James Riordon The sharpest ever optical image of molecular vibrations, revealing details as small as 20 nanometers, has been produced by a Rochester-Harvard-Portland State collaboration. The image shows individual carbon nanotubes with single-atom-thick walls (see figure at http://www. aip.

Patrick Logan on XML Programming (Mar 20 2003 18:29 GMT)

- Patrick Logan is back at a new home, which is great news. He's been thinking about programming language support for XML these days. He points to a thread on LtU that's interesting as well. My take is that the XML support that currently exists for languages basically consists of code generators for XML Schema. I've come over the past year to agree with Patrick's position that the traditional languages fall short and we should be looking at dynamic and extensible languages to lead the way.

I'm not always sure about Powell, but this is good news (Mar 20 2003 18:27 GMT)

- FCC's Powell declares TiVo 'God's machine': "The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission is a new convert -- to the personal digital video recorder faithful. "My favorite product that I got for Christmas is TiVo," FCC chairman Michael Powell said during a question and answer session at the International Consumer Electronics Show. "TiVo is God's machine." If Powell's enthusiasm for digital recordings of TV broadcasts are reflected in FCC rulings, the entertainment industry could find it difficult to push in Washington its agenda for technical restrictions on making and sharing such recordings.

It reminds me of a column (published in the SJ Mercury, I think) following the invasion of Grenada in 1983. It described an invasion of Santa Cruz to remove its (then) Socialist government. I wish I could find a copy of it.

20th March (Thursday), 6:14 pm (Mar 20 2003 18:14 GMT)

- Even though I don't feel obliged to post about the war on Iraq, I've decided to write this entry. I'm not sure if I will also comment on the war in the future, but here we go: Apart from the imminent danger for the civil population in Iraq, there is an enourmous danger for the UNO in the current situation. In the way in which the american government has ignored the United Nations, they have shown the world that a country can wage a war of aggression, without having to fear consequences from the most important organisation being. This has weakened the UNO enourmously and I fear that the behaviour of the U.
