Pausing the warblog, for now. (Mar 21 2003 21:59 GMT) - Dear readers: I've been asked to suspend my war blogging for awhile. But I don't want let you down -- I'm chronicling the events of my war experiences, the same as I always have, and hope to come to agreement with CNN in the near future to make the |

PHP Shopping Cart (Mar 21 2003 21:57 GMT) - Todays' tutorial: Building a Persistent Shopping Cart with PHP and MySQL by Mitchell Harper. A very good tutorial that could easily be adapted for ASP or ColdFusion. If you're just learning PHP, like me, John Lim has created a useful PHP, JavaScript and VBScript matrix to highlight the differences among the three scripting languages.More PHP resources: |

Bonnie Bassler: Microbes Are Talking To Each Other And Plotting Against Us (Mar 21 2003 21:48 GMT) - Bonnie Bassler: Microbes Are Talking To Each Other And Plotting Against Us By Steve Silberman Trim and hyperkinetic at 40, Bonnie Bassler is often mistaken for a graduate student at conferences. Five mornings a week at dawn, she walks a mile to the local YMCA to lead a popular aerobics class. When a representative from the MacArthur Foundation phoned last fall, the caller played coy at first, asking Bassler if she knew anyone who might be worthy of one of the foundation's fellowships, popularly known as genius grants. |

Batteries (Mar 21 2003 21:42 GMT) - Mac OS X Hints has a good article about Li-Ion batteries today. Well worth reading for those of us used to discharging our NiMH batteries all the way before recharging. The bad news is that you pretty much have to factor in another CAD$100/year on your laptop’s price to cover the cost of replacing the battery in 2-3 years, which you’ll have to do regardless of how much you use the computer.... |

CSS help wanted (Mar 21 2003 21:37 GMT) - As you might have already noticed the "blue" and "orange" theme display incorrectly sometimes. The menu sidebar to the right slips below the main text. While the change in the page.css file fixed a bug displaying the whole page incorrectly under KHTML and Safari it broke the display for Mozilla. To make it compatible with Mozilla browser again change: |

Database Corruption Reviewed (Mar 21 2003 21:37 GMT) - While mailing with the developer of Mckoi (Tobias Downer) when he was repairing a corrupted database he pointed out that the shutdown procedure might be the problem. There is the possibility right now that it is safer to stop SnipSnap using Ctrl-C instead of the command line version!I (leo) reviewed the code and it might be that the shutdown is initiated twice when run from the command line. I will be working on it and present a patch next week. Thanks to Tobias Downer the database repair will be safer and JeffC now has his database back. |

I hardly know what to think any more (Mar 21 2003 21:21 GMT) - So, now we hear reports that civilians in the West are stopping traffic and trashing McDonald's restaurants. Meawhile, civilians in Iraq are greeting the troops rolling into Safwan and Umm Qasr with waves, smiles, and shouts of "Ameriki!" and "Saddam no good!" Now, with Paul Berman's article in the New York Times Magazine, and the Salon interview, it starts to make more sense. The antiwar activists don't understand their history. |
