Caching Architecture Guide for .NET Framework Applications (Mar 28 2003 21:54 GMT) - Microsoft has just posted a very well written and informative guide to caching in ASP.NET. In particular, Chapter 6 is a great read. Chapter 6, "Understanding Advanced Caching Issues" describes designing a custom cache. At first, I thought it was just going to be an overview, but upon further reading it looks like another application block. |

Thoughts on Directories (Mar 28 2003 21:53 GMT) - The Harvard Weblog Project is providing anyone with a harvard.edu email address to create a weblog. One aspect that I haven't seen discussed is how people are going to find newly created weblogs. At present, Dave Winer is maintaining a list of Harvard weblogs in Manila. I am guessing that this list is generated automatically because 1) the listing is alphabetic based on the first name, and 2) it will be a bear to maintain by hand as more people create weblogs. |

Leonardo at the Met (Mar 28 2003 21:51 GMT) - I'm not sure if the exhibition of his drawings at the Met were worth the 1.5 hour wait in the longest line I've even been in, but Leonardo da Vinci is a freaky super genius. The exhibition ends this weekend though, so if you're in NYC and haven't seen it (and don't mind waiting in giant lines), now's the time.... |

Realpolitik If Iraq is to ... (Mar 28 2003 21:47 GMT) - Realpolitik If Iraq is to be the first campaign of a long war, then a bloody battle for Baghdad might serve notice that the US has the stomach for casualities (on both sides) and is committed for the long haul -- and I do believe that at this point a substantial portion of the country is in a grim and determined mood. A rapid conquest of Baghdad, on the other hand, would enhance our reputation for ferocious speed. |

The Perils of Abstraction (Mar 28 2003 21:42 GMT) - Summary: Communicating with a diverse audience requires you to use the least level of abstraction (words, sentence structure, paragraphs) that will effectively deliver the idea. When this general idea is ignored you must accept an audience loss of 50% for each unnecessary layer of abtraction. [Adam Bosworth via Sean McGrath and others] Every layer of abstraction costs you 50% of your audience. The cost of pushing abstraction [Seb's Open Research] Sean McGrath: |

The bloodless war that we were actually winning (Mar 28 2003 21:38 GMT) - One of the things that bugs me about this war is that we were already playing a much more effective game. Sure it was taking longer but the results of this other kind of war are always much more permanent. I'm talking about cultural war. |

He's Sick All Right (Mar 28 2003 21:38 GMT) - Henry Norr gets the honor of being declared sick today by the Online Wall Street Journal. They reprint this paragraph from Jim Romanesko's Media News under the headline "he's sick all right:" San Francisco Chronicle technology columnist Henry Norr says he was suspended without pay after getting arrested in "a peaceful civil disobedience" against the war. "The offense the Chronicle is charging me with is falsifying my timecard, but this is a bogus, after-the-fact cover for an act of political retaliation and an attempt to intimidate other employees," Norr writes in an e-mail. |

Federal Rules Amendments.
