Peace Blogs Added to the Index (Mar 31 2003 22:57 GMT) - Peace Blogs Added to the Index I know that Feedster has quite a few "war blogs" regularly being indexed by Feedster -- I wrote the automatic classification routines for the War Filter but it was unclear to me how many, if any, "peace blogs" were in there. So via a pointer from Doc, I found Mark Pilgrim's list of Peace Blogs and made sure that all of the ones for which he points out RSS feeds are now indexed by Feedster. |

nVidia updates Linux drivers (Mar 31 2003 22:56 GMT) - CNet reported today that a major problem in the quest to make Linux a more usable and useful OS on the desktop, that is the problem of a lack of hardware maker software and drivers for running hardware in Linux, has been solved at least on the video side. The story is that nVidia, currently the #2 maker of video cards, has updated it's Linux software and made it easier to fund and run on Linux. "The new installation software detects relevant details about the system it's running on and automatically installs the correct drivers. The goal is to make it as easy to keep a Linux installation up-to-date as it is a Windows-based PC" I run an ATI based card, but this is good news for anyone running an nVidia card, and this is a template for other hardware vendors. Friendly Fire (Mar 31 2003 22:51 GMT) - Friendly FireWTF does 'friendly fire' mean anyway? Damn, I'd hate to be on the receiving end of unfriendly fire. More spin-doctoring!Via random walks. Troops' anger over US 'friendly fire'Three wounded UK soldiers have described how they survived an attack by a US A-10 Thunderbolt anti-tank aircraft that killed one of their troop and destroyed two armoured vehicles. |

A little perspective... (Mar 31 2003 22:50 GMT) - This war is an abject and utter failure. What everyone thought would be a quick, decisive victory has turned into an embarrassing series of reversals. The enemy, -- a ragtag, badly-fed collection of hotheads and fanatics -- has failed to be shocked and awed by the most magnificent military machine ever fielded. Their dogged resistance has shown us the futility of the idea that a nation of millions could ever be subjugated and administered, no matter what obscene price we are willing to pay in blood and money. The President of the United States is a buffoon, an idiot, a man barely able to speak the English language. |

What Was He Smoking? (Mar 31 2003 22:39 GMT) - I have to agree with Walter Cronkite. What was Peter Arnett thinking when he granted that interview with Iraqi TV? His long experience makes it all the more difficult to understand how he could have been so grossly irresponsible in granting that interview. He besmirched his reputation, offended a nation and lost his job — justifiably so — in the process. Sure he probably wanted to suck up to the Information Ministry to keep from getting kicked out of the country like most of the other American and UK reporters. |

Syria Is Next (Mar 31 2003 22:39 GMT) - As many of you know - Rumsfeld has accused Syria of supplying Iraqi forces with night vision goggles, calling it a "hostile act" Well, the rhetoric is only getting worse. Now we have Colin Powell slamming Syria in a speech to a Jewish group no less. Yeah - THAT's gonna go over well in the Arab world the Syrian Foreign Ministry said it hoped to "see the invaders defeated in Iraq."The latest bellicose remarks came after a speech on Sunday night by Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to a Jewish group in which he accused Syria of providing "direct support for terrorist groups and the dying regime of Saddam Hussein. |

Let's Recap (Mar 31 2003 22:39 GMT) - Robert Parry has an excellent article out that recaps how we got where we are and why. He reviews many of the decision made leading up to this war and how they related to historical events. It is an excellent read. Whatever happens in the weeks ahead, George W. Bush has "lost" the war in Iraq. |

La Fallaci: Anger and Pride (Mar 31 2003 22:38 GMT) - It comes from their patriotism. I don't know whether in Italy you saw and understood what happened in New York when Bush went to thank the rescue men (and women) who are digging in the ruins of the two towers trying to save some survivor but only coming up with the occasional nose or finger. In spite of this, they do it without giving up. Without resigning themselves, so that if you ask them how they do it they say: "I can allow myself to be exhausted, but not to be defeated. |
