Let the Troglodytes Drink Beer Then! (Mar 31 2003 23:19 GMT) - Texan state rep. Wayne Christian, has introduced a bill that would triple the state's taxes on French wine and triple the 14 percent liquor tax that the restaurants pay for the wine. So if they're so outraged about European non-support, then why aren't they doing the same for German beer then? Morons. [via Radio Free Albemuth] |

I just read on Slashdot about Susan Kare's web page. She is the goddess of User Interface Graphics. She did most of the original Macintosh Icons and a lot of the icons for things like General Magic, Windows 3. |

Alternate Histories (Mar 31 2003 23:17 GMT) - From the War And Peace department: I'm trying to avoid posting about the war, but it is difficult. It is not all I think about, but it is most of what everybody else is writing about. And the science fiction geek inside of me - basically all of me - cannot resist posting this riveting account of one person's struggle to understand the forces at work in the world today, and to comtemplate not what is, but what might have been. |

blessed silence (Mar 31 2003 23:14 GMT) - well, not really. I got the replacement power supply and fan kit for my dual-CPU 867Mhz G4 Mac today. Took about half an hour to install (because you have to take out both optical drives and both hard drive cages). My machine is now quieter than the Athlon 700 in a generic ATX case sitting on another desk six feet away, and you no longer hear the high-pitched whine at the other... |

TrackBacks for Nothing... Being Intellectually Divorced (Mar 31 2003 23:00 GMT) - I spent the day today talking about the war in Iraq and possible solutions, about protests and voices. But behind all of this has been the disappointment of hearing people chastise the peace movement -- dismissive statements about self-indulgent moralizing. Once, not long ago, before the invasion of Iraq, I wrote that it was important to respect those people who choose not to protest: I think one thing we've learned since the last major global anti-war demonstration is that these demonstrations aren't for everyone; neither is some or even all aspects of the anti-war movement. |
