Well, yup, I hit 200 ... (Apr 05 2003 23:59 GMT) - Well, yup, I hit 200 laps today. 202 in 56 minutes. About 6 weeks ahead of schedule (which probably means that I overestimated it too much). I started swimming again in early February. It was hard to do 40 laps in the beginning days. |

Borrow and spend / The wrong time for tax cuts (Apr 05 2003 23:54 GMT) - House Republicans, fiercely loyal to President Bush, want to pass the full tax cut proposed by the White House, which would cost $1.4 trillion over 10 years. Fiscal moderates in the Senate, who foresee a return of destructive federal deficits, would reduce the tax cut by about one-third. If the Republican negotiators who control this process want to retain any claim as fiscal conservatives or stewards of the nation's long-term prosperity, they should make the Senate's number a ceiling, not a floor. Star Tribune Proposed budget creates frenzy Lobbyists for hospitals and community health providers said they would be forced to cover more of the costs of caring for poor people. |

Worldwide, about 10 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year, and 6 million people die from it. The report projects that the annual number of diagnoses will reach 15 million by 2020, based on current trends in smoking, diet, and exercise. Full story: WHO: |

Christians Fear Loss Of Liberty (Apr 05 2003 23:53 GMT) - Washington Post Whatever the outcome of the war in Iraq, Christians in that country are fearful about their future. They worry that if Saddam Hussein's government is ousted quickly and new leadership put into place, the new government will follow the model of many Muslim countries and outlaw all forms of non-Islamic worship. The country's half-million or more Christians have been allowed to worship freely under Hussein and for generations have worked and lived comfortably with Muslims (more...) |

Quitting smoking may be all in genes (Apr 05 2003 23:50 GMT) - If you're a smoker with a specific genetic variant, you may be more susceptible to cigarette cravings and relapse when you try to quit smoking. Researchers at the Tobacco Use Research Center of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found that smokers with a decreased activity variant of the CYP2B6 gene reported greater increases in cigarette cravings after they quit and were about 1.5 times more likely to start smoking again during the treatment phase of the study. I was just reading all ... (Apr 05 2003 23:43 GMT) - I was just reading all my rants over the past 24 hours and I realize that I have a perception about my writing that I need to correct. I'm NOT anti Open Source. I'm anti the political movement that says that if you buy commercial software -- open or closed -- you're a bad person. I AM anti the proposed Oregon law, which I see as anti-competitive and unneeded. I often use Open Source software and appreciate the time folks spend to bring that to me (and, I even pay for services/devices, like my Tivo, written with Open Source software). |

BROWSER WARS (Apr 05 2003 23:42 GMT) - Ever since it was released I've been using Safari as my default web browser on my PowerBook. It's faster than any of the browsers I've used on my WinTel machine at home, including Opera and Mozilla. It also blocks popups, one of the reasons why I prefer Mozilla 1.3 over Internet Explorer 6.0 on my home machine. |
