George McGovern and the "military-industrial ... (Apr 09 2003 23:58 GMT) - George McGovern and the "military-industrial complex:" The invasion of Iraq and other costly wars now being planned in secret are fattening the ever-growing military-industrial complex of which President Eisenhower warned in his great farewell address. War profits are booming, as is the case in all wars. While young Americans die, profits go up. But our economy is not booming, and our stock market is not booming. |

The Security Mindset (Apr 09 2003 23:58 GMT) - It has been an interesting few days at the DOCsec conference here in Baltimore. All this talk of multi-level security systems, covert channels, and Alice and Bob everywhere takes me back several years to some experiences earlier in my career implementing "Orange Book" mandatory policy checks in the kernel of ICL's VME mainframe operating system. There are some seriously different considerations for security-critical systems compared to normal commercial systems, although as I pointed out over refreshments - the main difference is that the " |

Conspiracy Nation (Jay Kinney) "It ... (Apr 09 2003 23:49 GMT) - Conspiracy Nation (Jay Kinney) "It used to be that an interest in conspiracies (real or otherwise) was restricted to the rather recondite circles of conspiracy buffs and the miniscule milieus of the far left and right. Ordinary folks just took the world at face value, trusted the official version of things, and went about their lives. However, at some hard-to-determine point in the past ten or fifteen years, what was once a rarified perception that "things ain't what they seem" has spread through the general population. Today, a bubbling brew of cynicism and suspicion seems the cocktail of choice for millions." Jay Kinney's article ("The State of the Conspiracy Nation", pg. |

Kyou wa... (Apr 09 2003 23:48 GMT) - The Day Of Silence was today. I didn't participate; my bitter apathetic cynicism rather precluded that, plus I didn't even know about it until last night. Meredith accosted Mary and me in the hall at lunch and gave us ribbons, though, which I was thankful for. There's a somewhat sparsely thoughtful metafilter thread about it. |
