Publishing Woes (Apr 10 2003 23:31 GMT) - I was thinking of writing something longer than a blog-entry. Anyway, to do this, I must pick a format. I want an open format, naturally, but I also want to be able to publish to both PDF and HTML. I want the PDF to look professional, but I don't want the HTML to look like ass. Which leaves me in a bit of a bind. |

Stanton Glantz's Margin of Error (Apr 10 2003 23:22 GMT) - Stanton Glantz has written a response to my criticism of his study claiming that Helena, Montana's smoking ban cut heart attacks in half. Among other things, he says the study was not really that small, because "there were over 500 cases included in the analysis." He seems to be referring to the total number of heart attacks in Helena and surrounding areas from 1998 through 2002. But the outcome measure was heart attacks per month in Helena, a very small, highly variable number that ranged from 1 to 13 during the study period. In response to my suggestion that the effect he attributes to the ban is preposterously large, Glantz says, "The individual risk of heart attack associated with passive smoking is about 30%, which is within the 'margin or error' of the 60% drop we saw in Helena. |

Pet pieve about LCD screens (Apr 10 2003 23:14 GMT) - The Dell UltraShart LCD technology that I link to below stresses that the image is sharper and richer, which is wonderful of course, but then it goes on to bragging of a increased viewing angle (from +/- 45 degrees to +/- 70 degrees). I have never understood why sideways viewing is considered a positive feature for a laptop. I'd love for my screen to be readable only by me, the person sitting right in front of it, not the people sitting to my left and my right. In meetings where I have used my laptop for note taking, I have sometimes reduced the font size of what I was typing to an unreadable size just to avoid curious eyes reading what I was writing. |
