Help! Pocket PC and 802.11b troubles (Apr 12 2003 00:58 GMT)

- Lisa got a Pocket PC for Valentine's Day and just bought an 802.11b CF card for it. No problem getting it installed or connected to the network (even doing WEP and using a non-broadcasting WAP, very nice). Avant-Go syncs over the wireless connection, and Terminal Services client uses it just fine. However, any attempt to use Internet Explorer or MSN Messenger causes it tell me I'm not connected, and I need to dial a modem.

Helpline Comment (21400) (Apr 12 2003 00:56 GMT)

- Arachne is a nice graphic browser for DOS but you need a computer that would just as easily run windows 3.1. (I did get it to run in 640K with a 14,400 modem, but it was so slow as to be useless) I have also run the DOS browser BOBCAT in 640K on DOS 5x and 2400 baud modem. People claim to have run it on an 8086 and DOS 3x. I am pretty sure you can run it in less memory that that, but not sure of the minimum necessary.

- House Backs Oil Drilling in Arctic Refuge An attempt to strip a House energy bill of a provision that would allow development of the refuge's oil was turned back 228 to 197. Drilling opponents argued that more oil could be saved with higher auto fuel economy requirements than the refuge could produce. Earlier, the House rejected a proposal to require a 5 percent reduction in fuel used by motor vehicles within seven years. Opponents of the measure said it would force automakers to make small cars. RNAi Roundup: Technology Makes Splash on Both Sides of Atlantic (Apr 12 2003 00:54 GMT)

- RNA interference is dazzling the research community, according to an article published last week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Given feedback at recent conferences and the number of journal articles being published using this technology, it appears that the article's authors are on to something. This technology, which is also called siRNA, or short interfering RNA, consists of a short double-stranded sequence of RNA that is inserted into a cell, and consequently triggers the destruction of the mRNA from a gene that is complementary to the sequence inserted.
