The new Safari beta is ... (Apr 14 2003 15:59 GMT) - The new Safari beta is available, and it's totally sweet. The tabbed browsing is the nicest I've seen, and they've also rolled in support for auto-filling forms on web pages into this one (useful for both username/passwords and for filling in details from your personal Address Book entry). One thing that may be non-obvious for the NetNewsWire crowd is how to get links from NNW to open in tabs in Safari. The answer is to go to the Safari Preferences, and in the General pane, select "Open links from applications in the current window." If you have tabbed browsing enabled, then this will open the links in new tabs instead of reusing the main view. |

Python is an Agile programming language (Apr 14 2003 15:59 GMT) - A new meme is quickly spreading around: positioning Python as a programming language for Agile development. Ward Cunningham and Kevin Altis launched the idea at PyCon. In this weblog entry at the O'Reilly Network, Uche Ogbuji gives a good explanation of what is meant and where it came from. |

Dell VNUnet, 4/14/03: We're all ... (Apr 14 2003 15:59 GMT) - Dell VNUnet, 4/14/03: We're all on the road to Dell Guy Matthews Michael Dell continued his quest for global domination by stating the obvious when he told a press conference that corporate chief information officers were looking for standardised technologies to drive down the costs of their IT infrastructure. By "standardised", he meant Intel-based hardware, and he went on to say that Linux was the world's fastest growing operating system. Notable for its absence was any reference to Microsoft, an oversight easily explained by the fact that Dell was sharing a platform with Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison - no friend of Microsoft. |

In between restoring email spool ... (Apr 14 2003 15:59 GMT) - In between restoring email spool files and bringing other services back on line, I've poked around the log files from the compromised machine. There is a picture that's starting to emerge. In syslog, I found some attempts from a particular IP address (obscured in case my suspicions are wrong): Apr 11 22:27: |

FunGlasses (Apr 14 2003 15:59 GMT) - I'm sure this is an ancient idea in SF circles, but how far we from having smart sunglasses that not only dynamically adjust to the light conditions but that also do cool and maybe even useful things like adjusting contrast, enhancing edges, dimming background objects, and making the entire world look like a Peter Max painting?... |

Gas Line Break Means Trouble for Baghdad (Apr 14 2003 15:59 GMT) - Baghdad Electric Woes One break in a critical natural gas line occurred well north of Baghdad. The natural gas supply powers auxiliary generators that, in turn, fire the 8-story-high boilers linked to the much larger steam generators. This sleeping giant,... |

Supreme Command (Apr 14 2003 15:58 GMT) - I just had the distinct joy of finishing Eliot Cohen's outstanding Supreme Command. Conventional wisdom states that politicians should set the broad parameters of military engagement, but leave the actual fighting to the experts who have been fighting wars for decades. Cohen challenges this "normal" view of civil/military relations by pointing out the extrordinarily active roles taken by Lincoln, Clemenceau, Churchill, and Ben Gurion in the Civil War, WWI, WWII, and the war for Israeli independence. Each leader was shockingly active in all aspects of military planning, both strategic and tactical. Churchill constantly barraged his subordinates, Clemenceau often visited the frontlines of the Western front, and Lincoln changed his generals more than Scott changes his underwear. |

Sean Neakums tries to confuse ... (Apr 14 2003 15:56 GMT) - Sean Neakums tries to confuse me with fancy talk about cameras and steep drops: I have a feeling that the cause is that your camera has a very wide depth of field. If the stuff beyond the drop were out of focus, and the precipice itself in focus, then the precarioutiveness might thus be captured. We're simple folk 'round these parts. We just point and shoot. |

It's Not So Much What You Say (Apr 14 2003 15:52 GMT) - You don't have to be the brightest bulb in the toolshed to be an effective president, especially if you're a skilled orator. GW may be smarter than people give him credit for, or at least more politically savvy, but it's clear that public speaking isn't exactly his strong suit, especially when he begins to stray too far from what other people have written for him. |
