belated london stories, day 5 (Apr 19 2003 23:59 GMT) - more solo sightseeing on my part, as ribs was working on an essay. having indulged in the risk barn-burner the previous night, the day got off to a late start, so i decided to spend the time i did have hanging out at the tower of london. the tower of london is pretty much the penultimate tourist spot. you can easily spend an afternoon going around, which is what i did. it is so popular with the french especially, that just before the bridge leading up to the tower of london, a set of the omnipresent "look left"/"look right" signs that adorn the london pedestrian crossings is translated into french. |

A Forced Iraqi Force (Apr 19 2003 23:55 GMT) - JAMES HILL A Forced Iraqi Force The day before, a sandstorm, the worst for more years than the locals could remember, raged across the desert in central Iraq. The advance toward Baghdad on Highway 1, just north of Nasiriya, ground to a halt, and as it began again that morning an ambush lay in wait for the convoy just ahead of me. |

My gardening postulate (Apr 19 2003 23:55 GMT) - Grass grows everywhere you don't want it, and nowhere you do want itI spent the afternoon pulling weeds out of our gardens - tomorrow we'll plant flowers. I came to the above conclusion in my back yard - there are bare spots here and there where I've been trying to coax grass to grow for three years. Meanwhile, my gardens were filling up with the stuff. Maybe this is a metaphor for life I'm not getting :) |

New feature in weblog software (Apr 19 2003 23:48 GMT) - UserLand has released a new version of the weblog software we're using at Harvard that hides email addresses. When the software was first released almost four years ago, spam wasn't the huge annoyance it is today, so the software used email addresses to identify users, visibly, in some of the URLs on the weblogs. In the new version, the email addresses are hidden. |
