Virtual reality (I mean Reality) ... (Apr 23 2003 23:59 GMT) - Virtual reality (I mean Reality) is starting to happen Jo Walsh is talking about her RDF markup version of a MUD that's templated off the real world London - or at least the tube map. This is a species of surrogate travel, a notion going back to the Aspen Movie Map of 1979. What's different here is using the mental landscape of the real world as a context for group interaction online (Jabber), and also as a framework for building up real world content on the net, such as the Grubstreet open guide to London. Now she mentions the very cool idea of taking Pepys' Diary and binding it into the time and locale from which it originated. I'm a skeptic of the more high-flown views of the 'semantic web', but this is one application that makes a lot of sense. |

Semantic Mapping (Apr 23 2003 23:58 GMT) - Jo Walsh is talking about a semantic mapping model for geospatial information called spacewebspace. spacewebspace is a MUD world done using RDF in Jabber (I think). She's talking softly and quickly and its pretty far out there. This Friend of a Friend project is tied in somehow. Steve Fulling would love her slides---they're all in lowercase. |

How Java Web Servers Work (Apr 23 2003 23:58 GMT) - At the heart, web servers are really very simple. If you can set up a socket connection and parse some headers, you're well on the way to writing your own mini web server. Though Apache and Tomcat are already stable, mature, and featureful, you may find yourself curious as to how they work--or interested in something a little smaller and easier to embed. In this article, Budi Kurniawan demonstrates a basic Java web server. |

Hockey Died (Apr 23 2003 23:57 GMT) - Hockey died last night, my friends. I watched the hideous carnage as a reflection in a broken piece of glass that had come from the pint of whiskey I had broken over my head at the end of the first period, all the while vomiting sadly, slowly onto my now-worthless Wade Belak jersey, as tears coursed down my face, wrecking the blue face makeup, as I wrote Pat Quinn out of my will for the last time, as I revised my "Ode to Hockey" never-finished chart-topper to include the phrase "it's rapin' season", I simultaneously punched a small, adorable angel in the face to symbolize something, anything, anything other than what I felt, which is how I imagine Ed Belfour must have felt - hung out to dry by the overpaid athletes he depends on to be gangbanged by goon primadonnas. Hockey's dead, and good riddance: finally an excuse not to hang out in bars! (if this phrase is meaningless, it's because my lawyer revised it to death. |

I'm Free! (Apr 23 2003 23:56 GMT) - This must be the week for hair liberation. First Jennifer had her amazing and awesome thermal conditioning straightening treatment done on Saturday. Today, I decided I had had *enough* with my hair, and I really missed having a "blow and go" hairstyle. Normally, I can get ready in 30 minutes in the morning, including my shower and drying my hair. Ever since I had it cut in February, I've had to do battle with it daily. |
