Madonna == Punk Rock??? (Apr 30 2003 03:59 GMT) - WTF? I'm sitting here at the dinner table and my wife is watching Dateline NBC and Matt Lauer is interviewing Madonna. I had to interrupt and hit the 8 second rewind button on the TiVo when I heard Madonna say her new album is "punk rock". She says, "To me, punk rock is thinking outside of the box." Ummm... |

And I For One Welcome Our New Linky Overlords (Apr 30 2003 03:59 GMT) - In the absence of anything pleasant to say, I'll be writing about this website. Take a look to the right where I'm collecting random interesting links as I come across them throughout the day, if I have time.... |

The answer is never the ... (Apr 30 2003 03:59 GMT) - The answer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery. If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you'll always be seeking. I've never seen anybody really find the answer -- they think they have, so they stop thinking. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer. |

Saddam-al-Qaeda Link? Bah! (Apr 30 2003 03:59 GMT) - Desperate to justify the aggressive invasion and occupation of Iraq by Anglo-American forces, the White House has been repeatedly making noise about new evidence that "proves" a link between Saddam Hussein and Usama bin-Laden. What do I say to this evidence? Bah! |

Protocols for the Two-Way Web (Apr 30 2003 03:57 GMT) - Dave Winer is giving a talk on May 9. In his abstract, he asks "how can we connect rich editing tools like outliners, word processors and graphics programs with content management systems running on the back end, so that it's easy for users, and gives them the best tools that we know how to design?" Dave outlines the 4 key protocols: 1. XML-RPC and SOAP for connecting tools to back-ends. |

Search Engine Visibility (Apr 30 2003 03:57 GMT) - Line56.com has a discussion on the importance of showing up at the top of the results done via search engines. A quick look at access logs for many sites will show an increasingly significant portion of the traffic coming via search engines. That is why, especially for SMEs, search engine optimisation (especially for Google) is important. |

TECH TALK: Constructing the Memex: A Personal View (Apr 30 2003 03:57 GMT) - For much of the period from 1997-1999, I too was a player in the directory and search business. My company, IndiaWorld Communications, had launched India’s first search engine, appropriately titled khoj in March 1997. (Since November 1999, khoj has been part of Sify, following its acquisition of IndiaWorld.) The problem I set out to solve in March 1997 was that of India-centricity in search. Yahoo was then the de facto king. |

Weblog posts ranked by popularity (Apr 30 2003 03:55 GMT) - Olivier asks if there's a Movable Type plugin that lets you rank posts by popularity, based on referrer stats. Since his "email me" link is stuffed, I'll answer here: yes, several, with different approaches, including at least one more that I couldn't find. It's really a very good idea, offering a new visitor who came in via a permalink your very best posts, rather than just the previous ("My cat threw up on the bed") and the next ("Gym class still suxs") and one that I'd like to see done by more than just uber-geek MT users who can figure out how to parse their Apache access logs. For example, Blogger's bStats app knows which URLs are permalinks (the ones with anchors), and how often they've been requested, by the day, week, month, or year, so it wouldn't be that hard for them to combine that data with your weblog data to make a < |

Depending on Undefined Behavior (Apr 30 2003 03:55 GMT) - It is interesting how often we see this in software development. A developer tries something and it works. Subsequently, in his mind, that is how the system works. Little does he know, that he is actually now dependent on a behavior that is documented as undefined. Undefined == unpredictable What can we learn from this? |

State media criticises Zimbabwe banks for closing during strike (Apr 30 2003 03:55 GMT) - In Zimbabwe, the state-owned media are sharply criticising the country's banks for closing during last week's three-day general strike. The strike was called by the country's labour unions to protest a hefty price hike on fuel. The criticism of the banks comes as thousands of Zimbabweans are spending hours trying to withdraw money from the banks. |
