Dean vs. Kerry (Apr 30 2003 23:33 GMT) - Ezra Klein's blog has become the site of a fascinating Singer vs. Klein proxy war between New England's two favorite sons. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Dick Gephardt keeps looking better.... |

Transmission of Multiple Description and Layered Video Over an EGPRS Wireless Network (Apr 30 2003 23:33 GMT) - In this paper, we examine the performance of a specific MD video coder on a specific real system, namely the Enhanced General Packet Radio Services (EGPRS) cellular network. For an accurate basis of comparison, we also examine the performance of one and two layer video coders in identical environments. The paper describes the EGPRS system architecture and network, as well as the simulation framework, the generic performance of MD and one-layer video in an environment with random losses, investigates the performance of different source coding techniques with the use of two wireless channels for transporting the video, studies the performance of the same set of techniques with the use of only one wireless channel and the discussion with some discussion. |

A Network Service Providing Wireless Channel Information for Adaptive Mobile Applications: Part I: Proposal (Apr 30 2003 23:33 GMT) - In this paper, we propose a network service that collects and processes PHY/MAC layer parameters for wireless channel conditions and provides them to adaptive mobile applications in clearly defined abstracted forms to aid them in their adaptation decision-making. This is to overcome one of the major hurdles in deploying powerful adaptive applications for mobile clients: lack of efficient access to wireless channel conditions. |

The Autocorrelation Matching Method Distributed MIMO Communications Over Unknown FIR Channels (Apr 30 2003 23:33 GMT) - As a supplement for space-time coding techniques, a new signal processing scheme, called the Autocorrelation Matching (AM) method, is proposed in this paper for distributed MIMO communications over unknown FIR channels, where it is difficult or impossible to synchronize distributed transmitters. It also presents the system model, the theoretic fundamental, and an optimal algorithm for the AM method. |

A Close-Form Solution to the Autocorrelation Matching Method for Wireless MIMO (Apr 30 2003 23:33 GMT) - This paper presents a close-form solution to computing the optimal zero-forcing equalizer for the AM method using the knowledge of second-order statistics of the transmitted signals and received signals. Numerical simulations are given to show the effectiveness of the AM method and the performance of the close-form solution. |

Blogger News Item (Apr 30 2003 23:32 GMT) - PUMP DOWN THE VOLUME! I'm not a huge fan of Geraldo Rivera, but the guy has done some good journalism over the years -- and I think he's become far too easy a target for other members of the media to criticize. Rivera is apparently readying a weblog -- and I'll be interested in reading what he has to say, especially about the Iraq incident. However, he ought to stop shouting. |

However, he ought to stop shouting. |

Sun Fire 15K Server Security: Protecting Your Information and Computing Resources (Apr 30 2003 23:31 GMT) - This paper gives an overview of the Sun Fire 15K server. The Sun Fire 15K server is a network of domains and control points, including System Controllers and any remote administrative workstations. In secure network architecture, security requirements are allocated to the individual network components and users, so that each will play a role in enforcing the network security policy. In a well protected environment, each element must have its own security policy. If any one of these is not enforcing the security roles, this compromises the security of the entire network. |

The other issue is that, while I've read Dune at least half a dozen times in recent memory, I've only read Dune Messiah and Children of Dune once, and that was in my early teens. Chances are I'll get more ... |
