essence (May 13 2003 17:49 GMT) - Poem by Makoto Ooka. Translated by Janine Beichman. From Beneath the Sleepless Tossing of the Planets (Katydid Books) "Although poems are in most cases written by people with little worldly power, they offer one of the most important keys to the basic form and essence of a culture. Layers of spiritual history are hidden within even some of the most ordinary words, and poets can use these words to awaken people to the great continuity of time of which they, through seemingly discrete entities, are an integral part." The 601am sports report (May 13 2003 17:48 GMT) - I'm not a fan of following sports. Don't get me wrong. Invite me out to a baseball game and I'll be there -- in the bleachers. But I really don't follow sports because, you know, I have better things to do. I have one exception: |

journalintime : Les autres... |

SERIOUS DRINKING I just heard ... (May 13 2003 17:47 GMT) - SERIOUS DRINKING I just heard an interesting case in favor of smoke-free bars and restaurants. A friend of mine, ______, observes that freed from the burdens of cigarette smoke, people can put away and, presumably, cope with more alcohol. There's no question that in a crowded barroom, your lungs pump concentrated airborne pollutants into your bloodstream, so I guess it makes sense that if your liver has one less toxic invader, it can better battle the remaining liquid assault. Besides, you'd think that tavern owners would like such a ban, since they make a lot more money from liquor sales than from cigarettes. It's strange, however, the first time you enter an establishment where smoking is prohibited. |

Coincidentally, it's my mother's birthday today, though she's a few years past 25. Happy birthday to you too, Mom. |

The Hypercube- A hypercube is a 4 dimensional analogue of the cube. Details of the construction of this object are given along with movies of a spinning hypercube The Inflated Hypercube- By inserting new vertices into the edges and faces of a hypercube, it may be ``inflated´´ to give an approximation to the hypersphereHyperTorus- Adding together three vectors, each rotating in 4-space with different frequencies and amplitudes, produces a trajectory along the surface of a hyper-torus. |

Band of the Day: ...Trail of the Dead (May 13 2003 17:46 GMT) - And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead was formed in late 1994 by singers/guitarists/drummers Jason Reece and Conrad Keely, long-time friends who originally met in Hawaii before both settled in the perennial indie hotbed of Olympia, WA (where Reece fronted the notorious Mukilteo Fairies). Upon relocating together to Austin, TX, the duo played their first shows as You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, eventually adding both the conjunction and the ellipsis as well as recruiting guitarist Kevin Allen and bassist/sampler Neil Busch. After issuing a live cassette on the local Golden Hour label, the group -- already legendary in indie circles for their anarchic concert sets -- released their self-titled full-length debut on Trance Syndicate in early 1998. Following the label's collapse, T.O. |
