Pop-Up Scams Of The Day (May 15 2003 23:58 GMT) - It seems like every day there's some new scam happening online, so to make life easier, today I'll put two together for the price of one. What a deal. First, the state of California is suing a software company in New Jersey for creating a scam where they tricked people into installing software that generated pop up ads - that were actually disconnecting your internet connection and dialed into an expensive $4.99/minute phone line. Meanwhile, less nefarious, but still quite annoying are claims that AOL tricked people into signing up for multiple accounts, by sending them confusing pop up ads that people accidentally clicked through. |

Drool (May 15 2003 23:58 GMT) - Question: If any Mac developer(s) want(s) to work with UserLand to build a slick interface for Radio (like this one for Windows), let me know. I suspect based on UserLand's sales into the Mac community that it would be worth $50-$100 k in revenue to the partner in the first year (more in follow on years). |

US: Simply Wine: Numbers reveal our changing tastes (May 15 2003 23:58 GMT) - I am not a numbers guy. Sweet talk (May 15 2003 23:58 GMT) - Let's get technical for a moment. When it comes to wine, there's sweet and there's SWEET. That rich botrytis semillon you finished lunch with - now that was sweet. Weighing in at 90 grams of sugar per litre - or more - that's one big whack of potential tooth decay in the making. Wisely, you restricted yourself to just one glass with the pudding. |

Starr dresses down and revs up crowd over wine shipping (May 15 2003 23:58 GMT) - Ken Starr was in fine form for his wine industry "coming out party" last week. The former presidential prosecutor was a controversial choice when the Coalition for Free Trade hired him earlier this year as a legal consultant in the battle over wine shipping. Premium wine is no longer strictly a bottled affair (May 15 2003 23:58 GMT) - It's not chic and may lack the romance of the ritual "thwock" as the cork is coaxed out of the bottle dusty from decades in a dank cellar. But a new breed of boxed wine is making an entrance to store shelves. And the stuff inside isn't strawberry-flavored pink wine or sweet, bland plonk........ |

Keeping The Mask On Internet Anonymity? (May 15 2003 23:52 GMT) - Interesting look at a new law proposed in California that would require ISPs that receive a subpoena for information about a customer to first forward the subpoena on to the customer before responding themselves. This gives the person the chance to contest the subpoena before their private info is revealed. This makes a lot of sense, and you wonder why something like this hasn't been proposed at a wider level. As it stands now, there's a guy in Pennsylvania somewhere who probably has no idea that he's the center of a huge lawsuit between Verizon and the RIAA on this very matter. This law would have required Verizon to at least alert the guy first. |
