VIRTUAL ECONOMY (May 19 2003 23:58 GMT) - Wow. This article from Wired discusses the country of Britannia -- a country which exists exclusively in cyberspace through popular role-playing games. The fact that Britannia is a virtual country has not kept real economic forces from arising around it. In short, there is a market for commodities which most players must work for by playing the game. The business is profitable enough that some players have forgone their real jobs to trade virtual goods full time. |

DRAMA ALERT! (May 19 2003 23:58 GMT) - William Hudson resigns form the Stanford ReviewWhen I joined, I was drawn to the group's conservative perspective, which I thought admirable in the face of a largely liberal campus, a position I still maintain. However, I can no longer judge the Stanford Review to be a fair representative of that cause, because I feel that it has let its political bias continually get in the way of journalistic standards of truth and fairness. Will's blog is in a new location and is now being powered by Blogger Pro. |

Have you seen the cool ... (May 19 2003 23:56 GMT) - Have you seen the cool new Honda commercial? It may be originally inspired by Rube Goldberg, who designed many such contraptions. In any case, the most suprising thing about it is that the entire 2-minute sequence is 100% live and unedited. If there is a Guinness record for patience, I think these guys should win it. (See the original at the Honda website) |

How The Shrub Administration Fabricated Details Of Jessica Lynch "Rescue" (May 19 2003 23:56 GMT) - According to the Iraqi doctors who first examined her, Jessica Lynch had no shot or stab wounds. Her life was saved by the brave medical staff of an Iraqi hospital -- whose members even donated their own blood when there was none on hand. The military staged the whole "rescue" to give the cameras something to look at. As far as the Shrub Administration is concerned, if all goes well, this rescue of Jessica Lynch was just the first of many "episodes" of these kinds of wars -- coming soon to a TV channel near you. Cat Gets the Cubs (May 19 2003 23:55 GMT) - What a great game by Matt Morris this afternoon. A complete game shutout, only 4 hits, 8 K and no walks. Eighty-two of his 117 pitches were for strikes. Carlos Zambrano pitched nearly as well for the Cubs, but 1... |

Why Germany May Have A Hard Time Dealing With Deflation (May 19 2003 23:54 GMT) - WSJ.com - The 'Average' Interest Rate In Euro Zone Helps No One As far back as September I was suggesting that the solution for Germany's potential deflation problem is to more deeply integrate itself with the rest of the European Union. This seems counterintuitive at first, but when you consider that monetary policy, and hence, short term interest rates, are controlled by the European Central Bank it starts to make more sense. Right now the EU has an inflation rate of around 2.1%, but the inflation rate for the individual countries within the EU varies wildly, with Germany under 1%. |

Life is Time (May 19 2003 23:53 GMT) - "Time Poverty" is the name of my current chapter in The Wizard of Ads. Roy H. Williams cites a study in which American business owners nearly unanimously agreed on the most important factors for employee advancement. First, was the person's ability to separate the important from the trivial - to prioritize. "Employers don't want their people wasting time on that which is not important, according toWilliams. |
