Did REM ever do 'I've Got You Babe'? (May 21 2003 23:06 GMT) - The answer, apparently, is yes. While trying to determine whether the MP3 I had just downloaded was indeed the Indigo Girls covering 'Blister in the Sun' (it was, happily), I discovered The Covers Project. Thier soul reason for existence: To document cover songs. They're particularly interested in 'song chains', where one artist covers another who covers another who covers another. |

Satisfaction Guaranteed (May 21 2003 23:06 GMT) - I rarely shoot rodeos with my G2,using instead a Nikon F-5. On occasion, when I want to get in real close or shoot from horseback,I'll choose the G2 so as not to be encumbered by heavy gear, lenses, etc. Shooting rodeos in the southwest poses several problems. Extra bright sunlight-most of the rodeos are held in mid-afternoon causing harsh shadows and blown out highlights, not to mention the bright sun desaturating the hell out of the scene. What film? |

portrait of the artist as a working man (May 21 2003 23:05 GMT) - It's never too late to discover Jon Langford: artist, worker, Chicago Welshman, Waco Brother, Mekon. Read this, then go and buy "The Mekons Rock'n'Roll" (1987) while it's still in re-release. Then go buy the last Mekons and Waco Brothers albums, or just whichever ones you find next. Collect them all--even the bad ones are worth having if you care at all about rock and roll, politics, laughter, or drinking. |

Israel in EU? (May 21 2003 23:04 GMT) - UPI: The visiting delegation from the European Union was startled this week when Israel Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said his government was weighing an application to join the EU. "It doesn't mean he is preparing the dossier for applying tomorrow," an Israeli spokesman said. "In principle, the minister thinks a possibility exists for Israel to join the EU, since Israel and Europe share similar economies and democratic values." For Israel, EU membership would mean an end to the regional isolation it suffers, and a strong security guarantee, along with all the economic advantages of the vast EU market. |

Mobiles #1: MM02 bows to ... (May 21 2003 23:03 GMT) - Mobiles #1: MM02 bows to the inevitable Brit mobile carrier MM02 takes a $16b write-off, with about two-thirds attributable to overpaying for 3G licenses. Since it doesn't look like the relevant governments are going to be giving rebates on dubious license purchases (having already booked them to cover their failure to meet EU budget targets), it's time for the Euro-carriers to get on with unpleasant task of marking to market. MM02 deserves credit for owning up to the reality. The Continentals had better follow suit, and while they're at it, include some allowance for the probability that WiFi further erode that ARPU they'd hoped for. |
