Peru (May 30 2003 01:58 GMT) - UPI: Protestors continued to clash with soldiers Thursday in the wake of the Peruvian president's declared state of emergency earlier this week, local news sources reported. According to Peruvian defense officials, 36 people have been wounded and one person killed in fighting that started earlier in the week. Teachers in the southern city of Puno are currently striking, though their action has been deemed illegal by authorities. On Monday, farmers entered the fray when they called for reduced taxes on some crops and blocked the country's main artery -- the Pan American Highway -- to keep produce from reaching the capital, Lima, and other major cities, although the highway was unblocked by Peruvian troops on Wednesday. |

Jewish press on the meetings (May 30 2003 01:55 GMT) - Reuters: Talks between the Israeli and Palestinian prime ministers ended on a positive note, setting the tone for a three-way summit led by President Bush on taking the first steps in a peace "road map." Israel announced a series of measures easing conditions for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip but stopping short of a troop pullout demanded by Abbas and included in a peace plan that envisions the creation of a Palestinian state in 2005. But there appeared to be little chance of putting the peace proposal into motion before Bush meets the two leaders in a June 4 summit in Jordan showcasing his decision to take a more hands-on approach to Middle East peacemaking after the Iraq war. |

Genetic disorder could have caused deaths of Patel babies, court hears (May 30 2003 01:52 GMT) - The three babies of a woman accused of killing her children could have died from a disorder inherited from her grandmother, a genetics expert told her trial yesterday. Professor Patton said Trupti Patel could have inherited the genetic disorder Long QT Syndrome - which affects the rhythm of the heart and can cause sudden death - from her grandmother. "Obviously the abnormal gene would have had to have passed through Trupti Patel and her mother without manifestation," he said. Genetic disorder could have caused deaths of Patel babies, court hears.
