Blogger News Item (May 31 2003 20:56 GMT) - When I was taking photojournalism classes more than a decade ago at San Jose State University, my professor, Jim McNay (who now teaches at the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography) would tell me "look away from the main action for the story." Now that I'm thinking about communities at conferences again, I'm hearing his words again. Is the story weblogs? I see that the TechED Weblogs have already started up. This is really cool. |

Blogger News Item (May 31 2003 20:56 GMT) - There's an interesting article in the online edition of the New Haven Register about the state of big time college athletics, especially in light of this whole ACC/Big East squabble. In it is an interesting quote from John Spagnola, a former Philadelphia Eagles tight end who also happened to have gone to Yale: <!--StartFragment --> "Every part of college football at the Division I-A level, I believe, is wrong," Spagnola said. |

Blogger News Item (May 31 2003 20:56 GMT) - Powell knew he was lying to the U.N. "Straw, Powell had serious doubts over their Iraqi weapons claims Jack Straw and his US counterpart, Colin Powell, privately expressed serious doubts about the quality of intelligence on Iraq's banned weapons programme at the very time they were publicly trumpeting it to get UN support for a war on Iraq, the Guardian has learned." So much for any lingering thoughts about Colin Powell being an honorable man. |

DoS via Algorithmic Complexity Attacks (May 31 2003 20:54 GMT) - Crosby & Wallach: Denial of Service via Algorithmic Complexity Attacks (via IP) We present a new class of low-bandwidth denial of service attacks that exploit algorithmic deficiencies in many common applications' data structures. Frequently used data structures have ``average-case'' expected running time that's far more efficient than the worst case. For example, both binary trees and hash tables can degenerate to linked lists with carefully chosen input. |

Multilanguages-J2ME Apps (May 31 2003 20:51 GMT) - Well I had to make decision on whether to account this time for different dialects of a language depending upon location or not; such as Chinese(zh-CN, simplified) and Chinese(zh-TW, Tradtional). At this point I am just resorting to choosing the dialect with the higher population numbers which works out to ones that are not banned. In other words Tawianeese poeple would not look upon an application displayed in Simplified Chinese as harmfull even though they may want or desire an J2ME app in their own dialect eventually. The same applies to several other languages. |
