How Do You Get Your Music? (May 31 2003 23:35 GMT) - Sometimes my ongoing quest to understand information needs ends up at my own doorstep. Now that I've gone ga-ga over my new iPod and crammed it 3.3 days worth of tunes into it, it occurred to me that all this music is stuff I already know. After all, 90% of it is ripped from my own CD collection. Which is nice, but what about new music? |

Architectural Mismatch or, Why it's hard to build systems out of existing parts (May 31 2003 23:32 GMT) - edd: Many would argue that future breakthroughs in software productivity will depend on our ability to combine existing pieces of software to produce new applications. An important step towares this goal is the development of new techniques to detect and cope with mismatches in the assembled parts. Some problems of composition are due to low-level issues of interoperability, such as mismatches in programming languages or database schemas.; edd: |

Stem cell progress (May 31 2003 23:31 GMT) - WaPo: Scientists Thursday said they have discovered a long-sought "master gene" in embryonic stem cells that is largely responsible for giving those cells their unique regenerative and therapeutic potential. The discovery of the gene brings scientists closer to a holy grail of biology: the ability to turn ordinary cells into those that possess all the biomedical potency of human embryonic stem cells, eliminating the need to destroy embryos to get them. Researchers cautioned that the new work -- details of which were published in yesterday's issue of the journal Cell -- will not bring a quick end to the political controversy over human embryo research. |

Geeks: How Two Lost Boys Rode the Internet Out of Idaho (May 31 2003 23:30 GMT) - Some people say I have an unusual imagination and bad taste. Throw in another part geek and I'm probably not that different from most geeks, you know the type. We enjoy Monty Python, video games and incredibly insane cartoons. Obscure quotes from movies and less obscure ones from the Simpsons. I guess that's me, if it has to be. |
