Matt Ridley's Nature via Nurture ... (Aug 09 2003 18:59 GMT) - Matt Ridley's Nature via Nurture is the least confused general discussion I have read of the closed loop between genes and environment. It is full of good examples, and it has extensive bibliographic notes for those who would want to dig deeper or check his primary sources. Readable and well worth the time. However, as other books dealing with similar issues recently (say Dennett's Freedom Evolves), it shies away from the conceptual framework that would best sharpen the argument: information processing systems, and in particular genes as coupled controller modules. |

nice day outside, dusty inside (Aug 09 2003 18:55 GMT) - I had contemplated staining the remaining portions of the shed and the front stoop this morning, but after weeks (well, months) of procrastination I have started the task of cleaning up the boxes and piles of, erm, crap that have accumulated since our move. All things considered it isn’t even all that much to clean up, however the job of... |

US Troops to Invade Libraria. (Aug 09 2003 18:50 GMT) - "Already reeling from severe economic sanctions, the once-proud nation of Libraria now braces for a military invasion that Bush administration insiders describe as long overdue. "We've given them every opportunity to comply with inspections," said Homeland Security director Tom Ridge, referring to Article 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act. "But radical elements in Libraria have mocked the sanctions. They've shredded records, they've purged computer files. This will not stand. |
