Is it time to pull out of Iraq? [Ian Posner] (Aug 11 2003 05:55 GMT) - In today's Telegraph ("The time has come for us to get out of Iraq"), Edward Luttwak puts forward the case for the arguement that you can't turn Iraqis into democrats. He says that those that are educated have no interest in implementing democracy and those that are not prefer an Islamic state governed by Sharia law. Is there something to be learnt here about the suitability of democracy as a method of running arab societies? Ian Posner Director |

Cha Cha (Aug 11 2003 05:54 GMT) - Jean and I have been practicing nearly every day for our cha-cha class. It's lucky for me that Jean has a sense of humor, since I still stumble despite all the practice. I think I've improved some, but I doubt I'll ever go beyond a basic competency. Last Tuesday was our second class, and I was so befuddled by what the instructors were trying to teach, that I ended up standing on the sidelines while just about everyone else danced. No matter how closely I watched, I wasn't able to pick apart the steps well enough to replicate them, or even imitate them loosely. |

Vatican names new Vietnam bishop (Aug 11 2003 05:48 GMT) - In a sign of slowly improving relations between the Vatican and Vietnam's communist government, Pope John Paul this week named another Roman Catholic bishop for a city in the Asian nation. The Vatican said the pope named the Rev. Antoine Vu Lluy Choung, 58, as new bishop of the city of Hung Hoa, a diocese listed in the Vatican directory as having had no bishop in recent years. A number of Vietnam's dioceses have been without bishops intermittently due to strained ties between the Vatican and Hanoi. Despite years of Communist restrictions, Vietnam's 8-million-strong Catholic community is one of Asia's largest. |

A man, a mission, a bridge, a tribute (Aug 11 2003 05:48 GMT) - It was a special day, with all the trimmings – a color guard, speeches and memories, a thunderous jet flyover and all the rest. But the real accomplishment marked by Saturday's formal dedication of the Rex T. Barber Veterans Memorial Bridge over the Crooked River Gorge will come in smaller, future moments. The day's significance really was about all the days that lie ahead, and the special history to be shared, the memories revived, the lessons learned. No doubt, those future days will involve youngsters as young as Rex B. |
