RSF details charges against Cuban journalists (Aug 11 2003 23:55 GMT) - An opinion piece by RSF secretary-general Robert Menart details the charges against journalists imprisoned in Cuba for publishing articles in the US press. Twenty-nine other journalists like him are imprisoned in Cuba. Most of them received sentences ranging from 14 to 27 years in early April in trials held in the best Stalinist fashion -- lasting just a few hours and with their dose of repentant offenders, spies and informers taking the witness stand. Their lawyers were not shown the... |

Equal Rights Upheld (Aug 11 2003 23:53 GMT) - The US Southern Command of the Defense Department imposed on its soldiers in a group run, having them all run a nine-minute mile. A nine minute mile is a reasonable request, after all. Well, not all people are resonable though, and one woman sued, claiming that an equal standard for all was biased against women. The Pentagon disagreed, fortunately: But a report by the Defense Department Office of Inspector General states that the run did not have "the purpose or effect of harassing women because of their sex, did not create a hostile work environment based on gender and therefore did not constitute gender discrimination. |

Speed up the clock (Aug 11 2003 23:51 GMT) - Is it time for training camp yet? Am I the only one who does not care much for pro football? Outside of the occasional Bucs game, pro football pretty much bores me. The NBA free agent "open season" has calmed down quite from the earlier action. I am still hoping for one last magic trick out of the hat for the upcoming season. |

The blue line in this chart shows the dramatic increase in attacks. A quick summary and trend of Internet port attacks (see ports 135 and 445) is in this trend table. A few hours after I posted this note, the attacks have dramatically fallen off. |
