Newfound Moons Tell Secrets of Solar System (Aug 12 2003 10:58 GMT) - "Not too long ago, it was easy for an armchair astronomer to keep up to speed on the moons of the solar system. There was the Moon, of course, and the four Jovian satellites spotted by Galileo, those two around Mars, and some odd ones here and there — that weird fractured cue ball orbiting Uranus, for instance. These days, though, it is tough to tell the moons without a scorecard. In the past six years, dozens of satellites have been discovered around the giant planets, more than doubling the total in the solar system. Jupiter is the current leader, with 61, followed by Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. |

Shut down my radio weblog (Aug 12 2003 10:57 GMT) - I was one of the first subscribers to Radio, but I now use blosxom: in part because I was not happy with having so little control over my weblog site using Radio. My Radio subscription has expired, but I'd like to shut down my old radio weblog. It's still appearing on Google although its out of date and inactive: a bad way to lose potential clients. |

Edward Tufte on London Underground Map (Aug 12 2003 10:54 GMT) - Someone asked ET about the London tube map which prompted a linkful and thoughtful discussion. The interchange symbols on the Madrid map apparently indicate how far you have to walk to change lines - something the London tube might usefully provide because whilst some interchanges are conveniently across the platform, but others are loooong, eg: Bank-Monument, or (various examples) on the Northern line due to semi-permanent repair works happening in the stations. The Moscow metro map is a little forbidding. But this one for the city of ??? |
