What it's like to be a gay Republican. (Aug 13 2003 00:03 GMT) - As a gay person, I feel fortunate to have been elected five times to public office. Being a Republican, I get criticized by both the far left and the radical right. Hate-spewing minister Fred Phelps called me a “faggot…worthy of the death penalty.” But such comments don’t come just from the Right. A Democrat in Los Angeles dubbed me “just another self-hating faggot” in his E-mail and wrote, “You and people like you are the worst enemies of the gay community. |

You Are What You Surf (Aug 13 2003 00:01 GMT) - I wonder if Google eventually will include news or news alert queries in its Zeitgeist (or already is doing so)? That could be pretty interesting. [Update] This is odd: the current Zeitgeist says it includes top news searches for June, but all of those links map to regular (non-news) searches. |

CAMiLEON (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - "In making data accessible it was, of course, impertative not to fall into the same trap as in 1986 and to understand that a crucial part of digital preservation is not simply maintaining a copy of the data but maintaining a means of accessing that data. Current media such as CD-ROMs are likely to be just as short-lived as the rapidly changing media of the past; paper tape, punched cards, magnetic tape (e.g. QIC 24), 8" floppies, to name but a few examples. |
