Fair and Balanced (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - Matthew Yglesias's weblog is fair and balanced: Matthew Yglesias: Fair And Balanced II: If you've got a blog, please consider adding a "fair and balanced" tag somewhere in recognition of Rupert Murdoch's out of control litigiousness (tort reform, anyone?). |

The Tip of the Whip That Is the Business Cycle (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - Spending on services is acyclical--it does not change over the business cycle. Spending on goods does change: it falls in recessions, and rises rapidly during expansion. Spending on durable goods is even more cyclical: you can postpone purchases of durables when cash is tight during a downturn, and accelerate durables purchases when cash is plentiful. |

music (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - I used to be heavily into music. Each week would see several albums (very occasionally into spending three figures), and 5-10 CD singles. Each night would see the radio on for 4 or 5 hours. Radio 1: Mark Goodier's Evening Session, John Peel. |

Apologists for terror (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - Tory blogger Peter Cuthbertson is rightly taking issue with those who express sympathy for terrorism. What they mean by 'objectivity' is an analysis where all moral judgement is removed, where no distinction is made between those who respect the... |

In demand (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - My working day started at 7am with a call from ITN. After last night's train debacle I could have done with a lie in, but that didn't stop my phone chirp chirp chirping and waking me up. I didn't get the name of the guy on the other end. He was some newsreader or other, wanting an interview in five minutes time. I bought myself ten and crawled out of bed then stood for a while, waiting for the call on the ISDN as my head slowly cleared. |

On blogging technique and better tabbed browsing (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - I'm addicted to tabs. Several times a day, I scan down my blogroll looking for blogs that have updated since I last checked, then middle click each one to open it up in a new tab in the background. I then work my way through each one, reading the earlier ones while the later ones are still loading (tabbed browsing makes being stuck on a modem a lot less painful). If I see anything interesting linked to from a blog entry I'm reading, I'll middle click that as well. Within a few short minutes I'll have so many tabs open I'll be running out of space in my tab bar. |

Announcing (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - In 2002 the South Dakota Industrial Hemp Council produced two editions of “VoteHEMP 2002 South Dakota” to educate voters about hemp. You may have seen it. We lost the election (with 40% of the vote) to re-legalize industrial hemp production in South Dakota last November; but lots of advertisers and readers have encouraged us to publish again. Hence, HEMPhasis, a magazine promoting hemp, liberty, and what works. |

Trees will grow by tube, naturally (Aug 13 2003 00:00 GMT) - The Biotube is made from a material derived from a non-edible crop, flax, similar to hemp, and a natural resin extracted from a plant grown in Brazil. It forms a sturdy and durable tree shelter that will break down in between three and five years with no harm to the environment. As it breaks down it is expected to provide a protective mulch around the developing tree. |
