A Husband...Or A Bus? (Aug 13 2003 00:37 GMT) - Both Katherin Boo's excellent (print only) article in the current New Yorker and even more so this online interview seem weirdly impressed with the Bush administration's various "marriage incentives" schemes to help move people off welfare.... |

TECH TALK: IT's Future: Hagel-Brown and GM CIO (Aug 13 2003 00:37 GMT) - IT Matters John Hagel and John Seely Brown wrote a strong rebuttal to Carr’s article in the July issue of Harvard Business Review (part of the Letters column download). We believe this is an important article because it very effectively captures the backlash sweeping through executive suites against IT spending. Certainly much of what Carr writes is spot on: companies have spent too much on IT in the past with only minimal (if any returns) and there is a need to focus on the increasing vulnerabilities we face as we become more dependent on automated operations. But Carr’s article is also dangerous because it endorses the growing view that IT offers only limited potential for strategic differentiation. |

Go team! Bush & Co. ... (Aug 13 2003 00:36 GMT) - Go team! Bush & Co. are on a witch hunt to track down any Air Marshalls who talk to the press. Can't or won't find Osama, but any Air Marshall who let out the news of cutbacks on high-risk flights is in trouble. Especially fun is that they use the vile PATRIOT Act to threaten Air Marshalls. |

Kudos for 0wnz0red Cory Doctorow ... (Aug 13 2003 00:36 GMT) - Kudos for 0wnz0red Cory Doctorow reports on Boing Boing that his short story "0wnz0red," which we published here at Salon last year, has qualified for the preliminary ballot for the Nebula Awards. Since he has a better grasp of the functioning of the awards process than I do, I'll let him explain what this means: "That means that in a couple of months, all the members of the Science Fiction Writers of America will have the opportunity to cast their preliminary vote for the piece, and if it gets enough votes, it will appear on the final ballot." Congrats. We're proud here. |

Re: Creating a TOC - how?? (Aug 13 2003 00:35 GMT) - If you're a stickler for format and flexibility, and not averse to some tedious manual labour, you can simply maintain TOC's as Stories, one per category, update them once a month, and put them at the top of your Navigator Links. That's what I do. I curse the work every month, but it allows me to display them in any order, create subcategories, edit out posts that have limited shelf life, put in an abstract etc. Here's an example. |

Helpline Comment (22984) (Aug 13 2003 00:35 GMT) - Walter The problem is that the media on those old foppies starts to shed and it gums up the read/write head on the drive. Then when you put in a new (different) floppy, the gum on the head scratches that floppy and ruins it. When you switch drives the new one gets gummed up too after a few floppies. All you can do is clean the drive after each floppy that reports any error. There is a head cleaning disk that consists of a piece of filter paper in a regular floppy sleeve and you put "cleaning fluid" (rubbing alchohol) on the filter paper, put it in the drive and try to read it. |

Hermes Birkin Bag v. Rubber 'Satire' (Aug 13 2003 00:34 GMT) - NY Times article on Hermes, maker of the (starting at) $5000 Birkin bag, suing the importer of a $150 rubber bag that is referred to as a 'satire,' 'amusement' 'fake rubber Birkin,' 'knock-off' and 'trade dress infringement' in the article. The rubber version is probably the more practical choice on a rainy day. |
