European Commission may create a ... (Aug 13 2003 00:21 GMT) - European Commission may create a task force to plan for fire prevention across the Continent. [Christian Science Monitor | World] If Europe was already very concerned with global warming, this will raise the alarm several notches. The proximate causes may include mismanagement, underinvestment, and archaic land use and ownership systems, aided and abetted by a Common Agricultural Policy that preserves untenable arrangements. But there is accumulating evidence for increase in extreme weather. |

That Wacky Emancipator (Aug 13 2003 00:21 GMT) - Via an excellent MeFi post: a postcard reveals that Lincoln offered command of the Union forces to an Italian revolutionary, who refused since Lincoln wouldn't declare abolition to be the purpose of the war. Further evidence that the Civil War was only about slavery after the fact, which has been mentioned as an historical precedent to the shifting justifications for war in Iraq. But as the Mefi post mentions, it's also one of those examples of how history would be radically different save for one apparently minor decision. If Cato hadn't stonewalled Caesar, say, we'd have a pretty shitty calendar right now. |

Just for the record.... The ... (Aug 13 2003 00:19 GMT) - Just for the record.... The California recall is a Bush-backer conspiracy. Issa may have been duped, but Arnold "Gropenator" Schwarzenegger is just another Bush stooge. It's just another part of Rove's nation-wrecking strategy. You could say The Groper isn't against gun control, abortion, or gay rights, but that would betray your ignorance. |

Mickey-D's does WiFi (Aug 13 2003 00:18 GMT) - Here's comes Mickey-D's into the WiFi space. My essay for Wired claiming free is the right price for Wi-Fi ("free" in the sense of being bundled with another offer in what marketers call a "customer loyalty strategy") seemed risky when I proposed it back in May. Already, in early August, it reads more like the final nail in the coffin. Over the summer, wireless industry insiders reached the same conclusion, as documented by Scott Rafer and Pyramid Research last month. As usual, my role seems to be providing the snappily-written executive summary of what everyone already knows: |

Batman and Homer duke it out in Vancouver! (Aug 13 2003 00:17 GMT) - I opened the Vancouver Province (one of two daily Vancouver newspapers) on my lunchbreak today only to be surprised to see Batman, Homer Simpson, R2D2, Mickey Mouse and others on the editorial page cartoon for today. Here is the link for the pic The cartoon does make a point that is being reiterated much the past week in particular: does the entry of Gary Coleman (!) and Arnold into the race for Governor of California not make the whole thing seem like a big, fat joke. Well, yeah, it does. |

Speaking of idiotic ideas....... (Aug 13 2003 00:16 GMT) - MVR Deputy Iris Varela said today that she had the Constitutional Amendment ready to be considered by the National Assembly. The amendment would allow the naming and removal of Supreme Court Justices with a simple majority. The opposition said the idea was "ridiculous" and "stupid" among other interesting epithets. The threat of this amendment does not bother anyone as it would never get to a referendum before the recall vote would. In any case, even if it did where would the Chavistas get the votes to approve the amendment? |
