Kazakh Questions: Of Terror and Freedom (Aug 13 2003 02:44 GMT) - We need to think through long-term policy in West Africa and Central Asia. The last thing we need is to grow another generation of Saudi-like oil ticks, and more authoritarian rulers who divert their people's attention toward manufactured external enemies in order to hang on to their power and wealth. Been there. Done that. Haven't enjoyed the experience. |

Thomas Pynchon.com (Aug 13 2003 02:43 GMT) - This site is devoted to the work of the American novelist Thomas Pynchon (born 1937). It focuses on three of Pynchon's major novels, 'V', 'Gravity's rainbow', and 'Mason & Dixon' each of which is the subject of a 'web-guide' - an alphabetically arranged series of annotations (with links to related web sites) together with annotations arranged by theme. There is an excellent section illustrating the artwork used on the covers of Pynchon's works in editions published in various countries, 'advice for newbies', a forum for discussion of the novels as well as a 'chatroom', and a bookshop. The site also contains a section of 'Pychonalia' and links to other sites of interest. The wealth of information contained in this site makes it an important resource for the study of Pynchon's work. |

Babies of wackiness : a readers' guide to Thomas Pynchon's Vineland (Aug 13 2003 02:43 GMT) - The American novelist Thomas Pynchon (born 1937) published 'Vineland' in 1990. This site grew from an e-mail correspondence between the authors as they read this novel (which has similarities with George Orwell's 'Nineteen eighty-four') for the first time and is an attempt to provide a 'starter kit' for those 'who want to read "Vineland", but are uneasy about making their way in'. There is a substantial Introduction to the work, with lists of songs, movies and 'cool names' contained in the book, while the main sections are a detailed page-by-page analysis and annotation of each chapter. This site provides a useful and readable introduction to an important and complex novel. (Jack Flavell) |

Each of Gaddis's five novels is explored in separate pages, with introductions, detailed annotations, and scene outlines. There are also sections on Gaddis's non-fiction, obituaries and tributes, reminiscences, and the full text of interpretative essays. The site has links to the Gaddis discussion group where began this project and to other Gaddis-related web sites. |

Arctic dawn : the journeys of Samuel Hearne (Aug 13 2003 02:43 GMT) - This site contains lightly revised texts of the writings made by Samuel Hearne during his explorations of Canada. In particular, 'Artic Dawn' makes available Hearne's record of his search for the river Chipewyan between 1769 and 1772. Edited by Rod Davidek, the text has been altered slightly - some place names have been changed to their modern equivalents, sections considered redundant have been removed, and syntax has occasionally been modified for clarity. The editor introduces the site through a discussion of Hearne's career, background on the native Indian populations with which he came into contact, and information about Canadian wildlife. |

Awww, don't mention it (Aug 13 2003 02:43 GMT) - Paul Martin has a new job as co-chair of a United Nations commission on international development and the private sector. "The developed countries of the world are wealthy today, because they tapped the energy and the vision of their entrepreneurs - those who started with vast dreams, not great riches. If this has worked here, it will work in developing countries too," he says. |
