Grant, Oh Gods... (Aug 13 2003 03:48 GMT) - I've been reading Dan Simmons (2003), Ilium (New York: HarperCollins: 0380978938): Hector stretched his arms towards his son, but the boy cried and grabbed for his nurse, scared at the fierce sight of his father's armor, and especially at the nodding horse-hair plume on Hector's helmet. Hector and Andromache laughed. |

Is There Such A Thing As A Satirical Lawsuit? (Aug 13 2003 03:46 GMT) - Because the suit filed by Fox News against Al Franken might qualify--after all being unsuccessful at being funny isn't a barrier to calling something satire. Fox said in the suit that Franken flew into a rage near a table of Fox News personalities at a press correspondents' dinner in April and acted "either intoxicated or deranged." It said Franken has become "increasingly unfunny." "Franken is neither a journalist nor a television news personality. He is not a well-respected voice in A... |

One Old Cat (Aug 13 2003 03:43 GMT) - Our main cat, Francisco, turned 10 years old today. If you ever see a stoned-looking, orange cat in my pic o' the day, that's him in his younger days (probably five or six judging by the bondi blue iMac in the picture). He's not as spry as he used to be, but the new cat Darla has really been good for him since she's maybe two or three years old. He's more active than he's been in a long time. |

Artificial Diamonds (Aug 13 2003 03:43 GMT) - Wired: The New Diamond Age. Two companies in the US have perfected techniques for creating cheap artificial diamonds, virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. The story of how they got there is riveting - retired army generals purchasing cold war soviet technology, veiled death threats to scientists at conferences and best of all, a very real threat to the De Beers diamond cartel / monopoly. Interestingly, the most important application for the tecnology looks likely to be semi conductors. |

(Aug 13 2003 03:42 GMT) - THE CALIFORNIA RECALL is making its way into Kentucky politics."This year there's going to be two terminator governors," Fletcher said. "One in California and one in Kentucky and I believe you can count on that, because we're going to cut the waste in Frankfort, give you new leadership."Chandler was ready with his own quip: "For a Congressman, the only thing you've been terminating is jobs," he said, adding: |
