Sturgeon Bay exhibits contrast (Aug 13 2003 03:27 GMT) - Sturgeon Bay - William S. Fairfield, whose name is on the most recent addition to northeastern Wisconsin's fine arts museum scene, was a journalist, liberal political activist, art collector and land developer. Most of all, however, he was a pro-active humanist with an entrepreneurial bent and a fondness for the sculpture of Henry Moore. For proof, one needs only to drop in at the William S. Fairfield Public Gallery, in a recycled historic building in the heart of Sturgeon Bay's business district. |

Works of faith - and art (Aug 13 2003 03:27 GMT) - Last of four parts Montreal - Mark Twain famously observed here that it was "the first time I was ever in a city where you couldn't throw a brick without breaking a church window." It's still true of a brick in Montreal or, in Quebec City, a brickbat. Standing in the Quebec historic district known as Place-Royale one day I watched a jaded tourist confront Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Victoires and decide it just wasn't for her. |

Crumb (Aug 13 2003 03:23 GMT) - I watched this documentary the other night called Crumb [1] about the artist Robert Crumb. According to every other reference about him, I am supposed to preface his name with "the underground comic artist". But I mean really, how underground is someone with a documentary about them on the bloody True Stories channel..? I have never really been into comics other than Tank Girl [2], so not surprisingly I had never heard of him. I watched it because it was Friday night and I was semi-tipsy and didn't want to read anymore... |
