It's a Detroit dance party, ... (Aug 13 2003 03:18 GMT) - It's a Detroit dance party, baby! Michael McDonald's new collection of Motown hits is one of the best I've ever heard. In the two weeks since I've gotten it, I've probably listened to the whole thing 100 times. Of the 14 songs, half are by either Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder, including a |

Corporate Misappropriation of the English Language, continued (Aug 13 2003 03:17 GMT) - In the latest bizarre and hubristic corporate effort to privatize what used to be our common heritage, the Fox News Channel has sued to stop a humorist and his publisher from using the term "fair and balanced" (as reported by AP). Fox claims that by registering this term as a trademark it gained the right to block others from using it in public discourse. My question is, why isn't Fox prohibited from using the term "fair and balanced" under fraud and truth-in-advertising laws? |

Veteran neo-con adviser moves on Iran (Aug 13 2003 03:17 GMT) - "Michael A Ledeen, resident scholar in the Freedom Chair at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he works closely with the better-known former chairman of the Defense Policy Board, Richard Perle, has been a fixture of Washington's neo-conservative community for more than 20 years. But he is now out front, in a public campaign for the United States to confront Iran, warning that Tehran will cause Washington problems in both Iraq and Afghanistan and that 'the mullahs are determined to obliterate Israel'. " Asia Times [props to walker] Ledeen is apparently the international affairs analyst Karl Rove consults when he wants a 'fresh idea', and he increasingly sees his fax transmittals to Rove turned into official policy statements. |

"The War Against Boys" by Christina Hoff Sommers (Aug 13 2003 03:15 GMT) - Although sociology and human development can be a slippery science, with ill-defined objective goals, Ms. Sommers has written a book of surpassingly convincing evidence that boys are being shortchanged in our American educational system. |

The project was launched with funding from an alumnus, and the school is seeking additional support for an anticipated cost of seven to eight million dollars. |

Earth Station 5 (ES5) (Aug 13 2003 03:13 GMT) - Via Doc Searls, I learned about Earth Station 5, a new P2P application and network. In general, like the approach, though the UI needs work (or perhaps just a cleaner skin). One of the interesting things about ES5 is that the search options go beyond typical file-sharing options. For example, you can use ES5 to find people. At first, this made me think of GlobeAlive - a search engine that returns live people - but I then realized ES5's person search is intended as a dating application. |

Jittery U.S. Soldiers Kill 6 Iraqis (Aug 13 2003 03:12 GMT) - Of course, the American authorities regret this 'serious' mistake. But, of course, no one will be held culpable for this war crime [and I will be flamed for even calling it so.] "``I wish Saddam (Hussein) would return and kill all Americans,'' Anwaar Kawaz said. Under Saddam, ``we used to go out at one in the morning. We went out at 9 now and they killed us. |
