Philip Pullman: All around you ... (Aug 13 2003 03:07 GMT) - Philip Pullman: All around you is silence (The Guardian) And above all, we need to ensure that children are not forced to waste their time on barren rubbish. I'd like to suggest a principle that should be a point of honour for everyone involved in education: everything we ask a child to do in school should be something that's intrinsically worth doing, something we ourselves would be proud to do well. |

Just A Little More Class (Aug 13 2003 03:06 GMT) - Ever since Wizards of the Coast released their Third Edition of the ever-popular Dungeons & Dragons, I have always been a big fan of the ranger. I love the great mix of stealth and strength, but after a few levels the class lost most of its luster. Sure, at level one you got both the ambidexterity and two weapon fighting feats free of charge, (given you wore light or no armor of course). But after that, there was really no need to advance in the class other than for purely role-playing reasons. Sure you got favored enemies, but what good is a plus one to attack at 16th level, while your wizard friend gets meteor swarm and power word kill spells? |

I might be imagining this. Am I? (Aug 13 2003 03:06 GMT) - I've spent a lot of time today, much more than normal, reading the news and other blogs and so forth. Something is jumping out it me, and I need to know if I'm crazy or not. Whenever any member or branch of the Federal Government does anything these days, the headline invariably reads "The Bush Administration...." As if every human being that works for the 6,327-headed behemoth that is our government calls up ole Dubya and says "Hey George, I'm gonna hang a sign on... |

Damn, why not prove them right? (Aug 13 2003 03:06 GMT) - Is this irony, or just plain funny? Franken Makes Light of Fox Slogan Lawsuit "And by the way, a few months ago, I trademarked the word `funny.' So when Fox calls me `unfunny,' they're violating my trademark. I am seriously considering a countersuit." OK, here's the thing: |

We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound fine? (Aug 13 2003 03:06 GMT) - I'll admit it, I'm kinda looking forward to the Freddy vs. Jason movie. I'm not stuck in a horror movie rules mindset, even though some of the things they've done with Jason over the years have been beyond silly. I'm totally willing, however, to forget every bad thing that has developed over the years in each franchise, remember only the cool parts and use them all to make F vs. J as cool as possible. |

six degrees of guinness (Aug 13 2003 03:05 GMT) - the past week seemed to be friendster week. friendster's basically a networking web site, and it's been around for a bit (although it's relatively new compared to similar sites). i joined this thing a month ago, which might make me fashionably late to the party, i think. the interface is cool, but around the time i joined it was down all the time and independent of that, i was pretty skeptical about it. the past week, however, i've been added by or added a bunch of people i already know, so i wonder if something's brewing. |
