heated (Aug 13 2003 05:49 GMT) - mostly it's too hot to think. i keep having to check the radiators in the house are really really off despite knowing the heating has been off entirely since april. i'm not convinced that they aren't coming on when i'm not looking. either that or our constant barbecue is heating up the air more than you'd think it would. this morning it looks grey and cool but it's actually misty, humid and just as warm as ever. |

mantis (Aug 13 2003 05:48 GMT) - Yesterday I started the drive to work before dawn, and was well on my way before I realized there was a praying mantis on my windshield. If I'd noticed it before I got in the car I would have poked nervously at it with a stick before I got too close, hoping it would jump off, anywhere but at me. Forget her mate, this bug could have ripped my head off. She was nearly as long as my hand from wrist to fingertip and had a highly intelligent look -- and highly perplexed, to find herself scrabbling for purchase on a windshield at 30 mph. She kept cocking her head as if she were trying to catch my eyes, and if those ragged jaws could talk I'm sure she would be yelling, "You suck! |

ToJ Leftovers, sig. char fates (Aug 13 2003 05:47 GMT) - From the WW forums: Ross, You asked if the "leftovers" from the ToJ books will be available anywhere. Honestly, there really won't be any. We've planned and designed these books long in advance, hiring authors to write about very specific subject matter and to specific word counts. The draft stage that we go through for any book always results in some material that isn't pursued, is re-written or is cut, but it's usually in the minority. |

Accused File Trader Suing RIAA - Claims Sharing Not Distribution (Aug 13 2003 05:46 GMT) - In all the legal accusations flying back and forth over the RIAA's plans to sue everyone they possibly can, none of the individuals who have been subpoenaed have filed counter lawsuits against the RIAA. That's about to change. A lawyer in California is getting ready to file a lawsuit on behalf of one such user with a slightly different argument that has been seen before. He says that just because a user has a particular file available for sharing, that doesn't mean the file was actually shared. In other words, since the RIAA doesn't have actual proof that the individual distributed the file, then they have no case. |
