Recycled Tunes (Aug 13 2003 05:30 GMT) - I'm still not sure which kind of father I'll turn out to be. Esmé and Jasmine can now sing along with I Want Candy, and The Tide Is High. Both songs are fairly popular lately, if the amount of air time they get on Radio Disney is any indication. As more and more songs from my youth get covered by bands that my children will be growing up with, will I be the sort of dad who knocks the knock-offs, pointing out that the originals are that much better? Because isn't the original always the best version? |

Dogmatic Essentialism (Aug 13 2003 05:29 GMT) - I've recently been thinking about the topic of cryptic ethnocentrism, not least because I've been charged with it both openly and tacitly. The underlying thesis of the critics is the idea that members of groups must (consciously or unconsciously) be... |

Security, service management style (Aug 13 2003 05:29 GMT) - One of the two challenges in enterprise security is how to integrate security management integrates with other managerial aspects of IT. The usual way of throwing BS7799 with some additional security procedures on the table saying 'thou shall comply' does bring you success. If security was a house, security policy would be the frame, roof, walls and ceilings. They need to be in place, but on their own they don't guarantee that the people will actually like the house and that they will like to live in the house. |

changeup (Aug 13 2003 05:28 GMT) - i just joined a book club at work, and the club was looking for another book to read. i casually suggested moneyball, which i'd just finished (and which reemer has written about so i don't have to), not really expecting it to be taken seriously. but then our main man andy put my suggestion on a list of books for the group to consider, called a vote, and today announced that moneyball had come out on top. i find this somewhat amusing, given that the club's reading list up to now has included hot groups: seeding them, feeding them, and using them to ignite your organization; |

ROLL REVERSAL (Aug 13 2003 05:27 GMT) - If you're like me, you probably read Josh Benson's first TNR essay twice, thinking, "Huh? Do I have this right? Could Democrats really oppose an initiative that would make 1.3 million low-income Americans eligible for mandatory overtime pay?"We were right -- that is exactly what the Democrats are doing, and it is totally contrary to stereotypes. |

Stingl: Leahy lucky, indeed (Aug 13 2003 05:27 GMT) - Fingers. Accident. Table saw. If you're a musician like Brian Leahy - or anyone else who likes your hands the way they are - you don't want to think about those words showing up in the same sentence. But Brian uttered exactly that sentence last Saturday in a telephone message to his wife, Nancy, who was visiting her folks in Three Lakes. |
